Elliott family 1700s in West PA and KY - Scott/Irish

Generation Two

John Elliott, Path ValleyJOHN ELLIOTT, born 1712 Northern Ireland, died April, 1784  in Fannett Twp., Franklin Co., Pa.,1. He married (1) PATIENCE QUIGLEY. She died Aft. 1768, he married (2) FRANCES KNOT Childerstone.

From notes on Ancestry:  Patience Quigley was a daughter of John and Mary Quigley.  Patience died at Pottsvalley, PA, Franklin Co.  She was born in 1715 and died in 1764 when she was 49 yrs old.  When she was 24 yrs old, she married John Elliott.

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM WASHINGTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 135 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown, Md. 21740 (Mindy)

JOHN ELLIOTT:  Quarter Sessions Docket, Carlisle, Penna., John Elliott Constable in Fannett Twp., in 1765. John Elliott was in Fannett Twp., in 1755 as shown in surveys, and he appears to have gone there with Richard Childerstone (Chillison) where they jointly took up land in 1761. St. Paul's Church, Phila. records the marriage of Richard Childerstone to Frances Knot, July 27, 1764. The first wife of John Elliott is said to have been Patience Quigley and he married as second wife, Frances, widow of Richard Chillison, as he gave it in his will. After years of research and study on the line of John Elliott above, the following is considered as authentic: To wife Frances the third of all my movable property and one mare to be chused by her out of all I have &c.

Notes from this email continued under the names to which they refer. It seems to me that these notes are taken from a will of John Elliott "of Fannett Twp., Pa." I have attempted to organize the information as best as I can.

Family tradition says he came from Fincastle, in Templecarn Paris, partly County Donegal and partly County Fermanagh. It is possible he first married a Hogan, but in America his wife was Patience Quigley. Again tradition says that with him came a George Elliott and if this is true George settled in Rockbridge Co., Virginia was later known as Captain George Elliott. It is thought that the relationship was that of cousins.

Had grant of land facing Tuscarors Path - 150 acres 5/14/1755. Went to Fannett Twp. (second time) with Robert Childerstone (or Chillison) in 1761.

Jess - I don't know if I have ever replied to you before or not. We might actually have a link in our Elliotts. My ancestor was John Elliott, called "Path Valley" John from Cumberland County/Franklin County, Pa. He had a "mess" of children - eleven. He was born in 1712 in County Donegal Ireland. He married twice and perhaps 3 times. He may have been married to a "Hogan" in Ireland. In America his wives were: Patience Quigley who had 1. Margaret m. 2nd George Wilson m. 1st Garrett Pendergrast; 2.James m. Margaret Hamilton 3. John, jr. m. Catherine; 4. William m. Rosanna Craig 1774; 5.Mary m. Robert Culbertson; 6. Barbara m. cousin William Elliott of Bullock Pens, Pa.; 7. Benjamin m. Sarah Ashman m. Mary Carpenter; 8.(my ancestor) Robert m. Ann Duncan m. Jean Wilson (not necessarily in that order- I think the reverse); 9. Jane m. Capt. Robert Wilson - children by Frances Childerstone: 10. Hannah m. Ephraim Harris; 11. Wright m. Margaret. I THINK JOHN'S BROTHER WAS ALEXANDER. I think they came to America together. I have notes on it SOMEWHERE......

John from Path Valley, Cumberland County, Pa. had a son (out of 10 or so children) Robert, a Col. in the 7th Penna. during Rev. war.

Robert had: Patience, William, Robert, Wilson, Daniel, Harriet, John, Commodore Jesse Duncan Elliott, Elie Williams, St. Clair. They were from Hagerstown, Md. Robert was killed by Indians in Muskingham, OH.

Children of JOHN ELLIOTT and PATIENCE QUIGLEY/Frances Knott are:

i

ROBERT ELLIOTT, b. 1735, Franklin Co., PA; d. 1794, route to Fort Washington, Ohio.

ii

BARBARA ELLIOTT, b. 1749, Franklin Co., PA; d. February 27, 1815, Wilkins Twp., Allegheny Co., PA.

iii

MARGARET ELLIOTT, m. GARRETT PENDERGRASS; d. Abt. 1797/98., Harrodsburg, Ky.

Notes for MARGARET ELLIOTT:  This from Washington County Historical Society 135 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, Md 21740.

My dau. Margaret. She appears to have married Garrett Pendergrass, the younger, "late of Bedford Co., who was killed at Harrodsburg, Ky.," March 28, l777. Bedford Co., Penn;

May 18, 1779, Letters of Admr. on estate of Garrett Pendergrass, late of Bedford Co., Penna., were granted to James Elliott, highest creditor. They had a son, Jesse, born prior to 1777, who married Betsy Moore, in Shelby Co., Ky., Apr. 24, 1797, (2) Garrett Elliott Pendergrast, b. 1776 at Harrodsburg, died 1850 at Louisville, Ky. (3) Patience Pendergrast mar. in Shelby Co., Ky., Sept. 18, 1797, Thomas Theobald, Her brothers Jesse and Garrett Pendergrast were her witnesses: (4) Polly Pendergrast, no record.

Margaret Pendergrast, after the death of her husband Garrett, about 1782 or 83 mar. George Wilson, brother to Capt. Robert Wilson who had mar. Jane Elliott.  Margaret died circa 1778/79; her sons, Jesse and Garrett were charged with assault against George Wilson, their step-father in 1799; I'm assuming it has to do with their mother's estate.  George Wilson remarried after Margaret died to ________ and moved to St. Louis Missouri.  A daughter of his, named Ann, married someone there.

Court records of Jefferson Co., Ky., show that Jesse Pendergrass, an infant son and heir of Garrett Pendergrass decd., made proof by the Oath of Margaret Pendergrass, widow of said descendent, that the said Garrett acted under a warrant or brevet as second in command of a company of guides to the Armies Commanded by General Forbes in the year 1758, and by General Stanwix in 1759. That he was engaged in the said service by Col. Adam Steven and continued therein till her was regularly discharged.

BENJAMIN ELLIOTT  -  This from Washington County Historical Society
135 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, Md 21740 I spoke to Mindy.

"My son Benjamin," having reeceived a sufficiency of my substance XX. This undoubtedly is Benjamin Elliott of Huntingdon Co., Penna., who heretofore, has been confused with Benj. son of Robert Elliott of Peters Twp...........the will of Benj. Elliott of Bedford Do., of 1791 added confusion, by reason of his houses, lands and the like. He names William Elliott of Path Valley as a nephew and Executor. Benjamin Elliott, son of John of Fannet Twp., mar. 1st Mary Carpenter, of Lancaster, Apr. 9, 1776; issue: Martha; Mary and James. He mar. 2nd at Mercersburg, Penna., Oct. 27, 1785, Sarah Ashman, and had issue: Eleanor; Harriet; Matilda. He mar. 3rd Susan Haines and had issue: Patience; Louisa; Benjamin and John. He is said to have been born in 1752 and died March 13, l835. The above interpretation fulfills the statement that Benj. Elliott left home because a stepmother came into family. - more here on Benj. of Huntingdon Co - Associate Judge, Brig. Gen. of Militia 1796.

JANE ELLIOTT1, b. Abt. 1761; m. ROBERT WILSON, November 02, 1777; b. Abt. 1754.  Notes for JANE ELLIOTT:  This from Washington County Historical Society 135 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, Md 21740 I spoke to Mindy.  "My daughter Jane." She married a neighbor, Robert Wilson, presumably at the home of her brother Robert Elliott in Hagerstown, Pension record of Robert Wilson, who died in Jefferson C., Ky. XI.

Farther down in the same email she adds this; Jane Elliott Wilson, widow of Capt. Robert Wilson, in a sworn statement says she was married to Robert Wilson at Hagerstown, Md., by Rev. Mr. Young, on Nov 2, 1777 (license gives Nov. 4). Before marriage she resided with her father John Elliott, who lived in Penna., about 30 or 40 miles from Hagerstown. Her husband's home was about 3 miles from her father's home. Shortly after her marriage her husband took her back to her father's house; he then rejoined the army at Valley Forge. In 1820 Robert Wilson testified he was 66 years old on Nov 13th and gives his wife's age as 59. Both testify to their emigration to Kentucky soon after 1790. Excerpts from the Louisville Courrier Journal" June 5, l898. "Capt. and Mrs. Robert Wilson and wife sought a new home in this state". Capt Wilson mar. Joan (dau. of John Elliott who was a sister of Margaret Elliott Pendergrast. Collins History of Kentucky states that Garrett Pendergrast was killed by the Indians at or near the Fort at Harrodsburg in March l777, and a Margaret Pendergrass, probably his widow, was living at Harrodsburg between Dec., 1777 and Oct. 1778. One note states she married 1st Garrett Pendergrass, the younger; mar. 2nd George Wilson.
