Haw River Presbyterian
Church Cemetery, outside Greensboro, North Carolina on the boarder of Guilford and Rockingham counties, the cemetery is in Rockingham. John Buchanan
is my maternal 5th great grandfather. He was born in 1786 and died
in 1820 in the 34th year of his age, according to his tombstone below. I
took numerous pictures as I don't know when I'll get back and who knows
how long these tombstones will last. It amazes me that I can read John's
from 1820. Next to John is his father, William Buchanan, and his wife, Frances Montgomery. William has a simple marker with his initials on it, but they are legible and he died in 1798 or so. Frances doesn't have a stone, but an index done in the 60's indicated there was a sandstone marker with the initials F. B. on it and I'm positive it's Frances, William's wife, and John's mother. The ground next to William, where Frances is, is sunken in.
I visited the cemetery on two different days while visiting NC, October, 2006, and you can see the lighting differences. The cemetery is surrounded by fields cultivated in tobacco; and a grove of trees has grown around it and is somewhat dense with a lot of underbrush, but in remarkable shape considering it dates back to the 1700s.
