Ratliff/Ratcliff Line - English?
Our line was in Christian County, Kentucky, and some of the surrounding counties as well, i.e., Logan, Hopkins, Todd, etc. Note that a large part of Western Kentucky was once all Logan County, and some of our ancestors could have been in Logan to begin with, but as new counties were created, they ended up in the newly formed one.
See my Ratliff
Notes here.
First Generation
Our line begins with (and our brick wall) John "Johnny" RATLIFF who was born
somewhere in North Carolina circa 1788 (according to information he put down on the 1850 Kentucky census. John "Johnny" died in Christian or Logan Co., Kentucky. He disappeared from the census' after 1850 in Logan County where he was last living with his wife Nancy Ratliff, nee
Oglesby. In the 1860 Logan County Census, Baugh Station, Nancy his wife, is listed as living alone, age 76, one or two doors down from her son Constant Oglesby Ratliff and his family.
More than likely, Johnny was buried on the farm they were living on
at the time.
On the left is a tax list from Christian County, KY in 1810 with his name, how many acres, slaves and horses he owned, and where he lived. Through research, it appears that Constant and Johnny (father and son-in-law) had a close relationship. Johnny was also a part-time land surveyor
as was Constant Oglesby and William Coursey, who was Johnny's wife's grandfather,
through Ann Coursey. We think somewhere along the line, whether it was South Carolina, North Carolina, or Tennessee, Johnny hooked up with the Oglesby and Coursey families, or
perhaps they come into the county separately and then established their relationship?, my guess is it was established before they came to KY,
probably in South Carolina or even before that.
In the 1790 96 District, Edgefield County, S.C. Census, William Coursey, (father of Nancy Coursey,
Sr.), is living near Constant Oglesby who eventually marries William's
daughter, Nancy Coursey. Constant and Nancy go on to have Nancy "Ann" Oglesby, "Jr." who marries our Johnny Ratliff. Our Johnny would fit in either
the William or Richard's family that I found in South Carolina, but he would fit into a lot of Ratliff families I've found so far. Johnny stated on a KY census that he was born in 1788 in North Carolina, so IF he is a son of either William or Richard
in South Carolina, and since this is the 1790 census for South Carolina, then they would have had to have moved to SC shortly after Johnny's birth. BOTH names come down the line (William and Richard).
Another family name could be Jesse. However, upon
further research, I now suspect that John was a son of one of the
Ratliff families who were Quakers in North Carolina who descend from
Richard Ratliff of Talbot Co., Maryland.
On July 7, in 1809 when "Johnny" was around 21, he married Nancy (Ann) OGLESBY, daughter of Constant OGLESBY & Nancy COURSEY, Sr. She was born 1786 in South Carolina. Nancy (Ann) died in Christian or Logan Co., Kentucky
sometime after 1860 as she was in the Logan County, KY 1860 census but the
not the 1870.
Again, It is unknown
exactly when Johnny Ratcliffe/Ratliff died or where he and Nancy are buried. One researcher indicated that Johnny was buried in the Rockbridge Cemetery, in Christian County, (picture left is myself sitting at the entrance of the Rockbridge Cemetery in Kentucky) but no tombstone, or cemetery index has
proven this. Also, according to the Logan County, 1850 census, Johnny and Nancy were living in Baugh's Station, in Logan County, and it wouldn't make sense for him to be taken to a cemetery 50 plus miles north (over to Christian county from Logan) to be buried. Nancy's father was William Coursey, from South Carolina.

Constant Oglesby Ratliff - (1820-1879) (our line) He was born 19 June 1820 and died 27 Dec 1879 when he was 59 yrs old in Christian County, KY. He is buried in the Gibson Cemetery in Christian County, KY. Picture is of myself taken in November 2002, in the Gibson Cemetery. He married Mary Bertha "Polly" Gibson. |

Polly R. Ratliff
- Born circa 1813/14. She married Constant MEZZO
in Christian County, KY in 1833. Constant subsequently married
two other women and I think that Polly R. Ratliff didn't live long
after they were married. Perhaps she died in child birth. |

Mary B. Ratliff? -
born circa 1820 - Fairfax, Virginia?
There is a Mary B. Ratliff who marries Meredith A. Helm in Christian
County, KY in 1852, she was 32 yrs old, being born in 1820.
She was born in Fairfax, Virginia. The only reason I suspect
some kind of connection is a Helm is in a Ratliff household later
on, and a picture of Meredith Wilhelm was passed down in the family.
Another of the Ratliff girls marries a Helm below also. |
Second Generation
Constant Oglesby RATCLIFFE.
Born on 19 Jun 1820 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Constant Oglesby died in Christian Co., Kentucky on 27 Dec 1879, he was 59.
Constant O. Ratliff was enlisted in the Civil War. He enlisted 18 Aug 1862, mustered in 6 Sept 1862 in Russellville, KY for one year. He was a Private in Company D., 8th Kentucky Calvary. He mustered out on 23 Sept 1863, in Russellville, KY. See information on his service and regiment

I think the two children above were
Carolina America Ratcliffe's children. One by her first
husband and one by the second, however the Mary Ratcliff below
married a Helm and the William B. H. could be a Helm as there was a
Lycurgus Helm in the 1870 census above.
There
is a Mary B. Ratcliff who marries a Meredith A. Helm in 1852 in
Christian County, KY, she is listed as being 32 yrs old, making her
born in 1818. He is listed as 34 yrs old, resident of New
Orleans. However she indicates that she was born in Fairfax,
Virginia, so she could be no relation to us, but I suspect some
relationship.

Constant is buried in Gibson Family Cemetery
near Gwendolyns' place, KY. On 21 May 1839 when Constant Oglesby was 18, he married Mary Bertha (Polly) GIBSON, daughter of Meredith GIBSON & Hannah MOREHEAD.
She was born in 1818, according to the 1860 Logan County census (according
to her obit she was born in 1816. Constant's occupation was listed as "Teacher and Farmer" on a census and somewhere else he is listed as being the Sheriff
and I also saw that he married someone so "preacher" or magistrate, or
whatever the title, can be added as well. John went by the name of
"Byron".
Constant Oglesby Ratliff and Mary Polly Gibson had the following children: (according to the 1850 Logan County Census). From Wilma: Narcissa,
Andromecha, Aurelius, and Lycurgus. These names come from ancient
Greek and Roman history and mythology, which would indicate that these
families were well educated and probably fairly well off.

John Aurelius Byron Ratcliffe (1840-1895) (our line; my maternal gr gr grandfather. He married Lucy Clementine Lynn, my line more below. In the 1860 Christian County Census, John is living with R. W. Williams,
and is listed as farmer. Next door is his Aunt, Ann Ratliff
Bourland, her husband Felix and their children. |

Caroline America Ratcliffe, born 1842, married William Crable, January 9, 1859, Robertson County, TN
when she was 17 yrs old. I believe she had a son named William or
Wilson Crable in 1864. (Caroline is referred to as Amanda by her grandmother, Hannah More Gibson (mother's mother) in her will.
Her first husband William must have
died as she married second to an Meredith D. Wilhelm - 12 July 1866 - Logan Co.
She is referred to as Mrs. America Grable in the Marriage Record. |

Kirk Ratcliffe, born 1842/43 (it is possible that "Kirk" and Lysurgus
are one and the same, my cousin and I think so, but not sure yet.
Gwen told my mom and Betty that Kirk was killed by his father-in-law.
Supposedly he was going to kill his father-in-law, but the tables were
turned and he was killed instead. I've never found a
marriage record, or know where he is buried. The last I find of him is
in the 1870 Logan County, KY census age 28 living with another family
and is listed as Kirg Ratlif. |

Lycurgus/Sycurgus Ratcliffe,
born 1842?
- I have no idea who this was, where the name came from and what became
of him or her, or if they ever existed outside of the census record. |

Loussign (Nancy) Ratcliffe (1845/46-1915) (in Tennessee). She married John Wiggins. This is my cousin Kelley's line. |

Jesse

Ratcliffe, born 1850/51, (Colonel Starling was shot and killed by
Jesse Ratcliffe in the excitement of a campaign while he was a Republican candidate for Sheriff, June 12, 1880.)
Jesse A. Ratcliff & Telitha A. F. Henderson - 26 May 1888
-
Christian County Marriage Records. In this paragraph are copies of court records and a newspaper article regarding the case. I have not found out what Jesse's sentence was.
I found Jesse in the 1870 Christian County Census living with a Campbell
family working on their farm. He is listed as 19.
Recently, 2009, I found in the
Hopkinsville Kentuckian Newspaper, Jesse was killed in 1905 by a train
running over his. He was living in Lyons county, KY, one county
over from Christian. In the 1900 Lyons Census he is living with
his wife, Delitha, and three children: Claude, b. 1891, Winfred,
b. 1897, both sons and a step daughter Robbie Henderson, b. 1884.
Apparently Delitha (Telitha) was married before she married Jessie.
Now I do not know her true maiden name as I thought it was Henderson.

Hannah Victoria Ratcliffe, born September 1852, according to the 1860 Logan County census where she was listed as 8 yrs old

Mills precinct, was married to Miss Victoria Ratliff, near here, last
Sunday, by Rev R.I. Melton. (no date). She and Timothy Hammonds had five children: Sebastian, Mary, Victoria, Ora, and Clarence.

More Notes from Wilma: In Christian Co. Ky. marriages, there was a Mary B. Ratcliff who married a Meredith Helm on Oct. 9, 1852. She can't be a daughter of Constant Oglesby Ratcliff, but she could be a cousin. On your website you have an A.M. Ratcliff (Ann) and her children who came from Va. There is a daughter, Mary B. You wondered if she might be John Ratcliff's sister. Did you mean sister-in-law? If she was, then her children and Constant O. Ratcliff would be cousins. In the 1870 census there was a Lycurgus Helm, age 3 living with Constant and Mary Ratcliff, and that could explain the connection. I've been working on Oglesby's most recently, and I found something that bugs me. On the 1830 census of Christian Co. Ky. Constant Oglesby Sr. is listed as age 80-90, meaning he was born between 1741 and 1749. He would not be the son of Jacob Oglesby and Ann Bailey who married in 1760. Could he be the son of Jacob Oglesby and Constance_______ ? Let me Know what you make of it. |
