Montgomery Line - Scott-Irish - see this link

Our line, on the Internet, has been connected back to one James Montgomery and Anne Thompson.  I can not prove the connection, but will store the information to pursue in the future here.

Notes from my cousin Myrvin:

I feel that I have found William Montgomery's (who married Hannah Jane Patterson) parents. I have some documentation hopeful it is correct. I know from two letters from George M. Black and Thornton Dillworth which are abt. 100 yrs. old that Hannah married William who was a relative. Then in a book Dawes family of Booneville, Mississippi pages 339-340 it states that James Montgomery's (wife, Ann Thompson) son William married Jane Patterson.

Then a James Patrick Montgomery states that William Montgomery parents were Captain James Montgomery and Ann Thompson. James Patrick Montgomery E-mail in 2003 was Montytax@msn.com. James Patterson is Mary Montgomery Brother. Mary Montgomery is Hannah Jane Patterson mother.

Several people I have been in contact with over the years states that Joseph Montgomery and Jane Edgar are Mary Montgomery parents. That Joseph had a brother named Hugh who was Catherine Montgomery's father. The letter from Thornton Dillworth says that the Calhoun's were Mary's cousin. Catherine Montgomery married a Cahoun. The letter from Thornton Dillworth (this letter was sent to my great grandfather Montgomery) and the article written by George M. Black states that Jane Edgar only had 4 children, Thomas, Mary, James and Jane.  Myrvin

James Montgomery and Anne Thompson had the following children: Robert, Samuel,
William, John, Hugh, James, Ann Margaret, Joseph and Elizabeth. Joseph and Hugh Montgomery were named Hugh Montgomery.

William never went to Virginia but his father did and I know two of his brothers went. William stayed in Guilford Co., N. C. There was some other Montgomery's in Virginia but as far as I have found they are not related to our Montgomery's. Just like there are two set of Patterson's in Pa. only James and Mary Montgomery Patterson are ours. Thomas Montgomery (Mary's brother) stayed in Pa. James (Mary's brother) left Pa. and went to Va., Jane (Mary's sister) who married a Ramsey went to Va.

WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, Private, served under Militia Captain, Arthur Forbis of the 71st. Regiment at Guilford.

Brown, in his “History of the Highland Clans”, when speaking of the 71st. Regiment at Guilford, says, “The Americans, covered by the fence in their front, reserved their fire until the British were within 30 or 40 paces at which distance they opened a most destructive fire, which annihilated nearly one-third of Webster's Brigade.” WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, of this county, who was one of Captain Forbis’ little company, and one of the four who stood by him to the last, when describing the scene in after life, usually illustrated it by saying that, “after they delivered their first fire, which was a deliberate one, with their rifles, the part of the British line, at which they aimed, looked like the scattering stalks in a wheat-field when the harvest-man has passed over it with his cradle.”

Caruther’s “The Old North State in 1776” - Vol. 2, Page 131, Captain Forbis said before he died that if all the men under his command, meaning the regiment, had shown as much firmness as WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, John Low, John Allison, and William Paisley, he would have kept that part of the British line back in spite of everything.

Caruther’s “The Old North State in 1776” - Vol. 2, Page 139, Rankin, in giving list of men in Buffalo Congregation who fought in Revolution says, “WILLIAM MONTGOMERY was living on Buffalo before the Revolution and was a soldier in that war.”

“Buffalo Men in the Revolution”, by Rankin - Page 139: “The Gillispies, the Gilmers, the Forbi ses, the MONTGOMERIES, and many others were men whose names ought not to be excluded from the enduring records of time; nor will they be forgotten soon. Theses men after having been with the foremost in the Regulation battle were the best partisan officers and the best soldiers that the cause of independence had in this region.”

“Life of David Caldwell”, by Caruthers - Page 170: The Montgomeries, of Scotch-Irish descent, were among the early settlers in America. They came from Mongomo in Scotland, the latter part of the 16th century to Lancaster County, Penn. William Montgomery, Sr. and his wife, Hannah, came from Pennsylvania to settle on North Buffalo, near Bethel Church, in Guilford County, about the year 1770. The children of William Montgomery, Sr. and his wife, Hannah, were William (born around 1760), Frances*, Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary, John, Rebekah, and David.

Son, WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, married Nancy Brawley and was a prosperous farmer on North Buffalo until his death there. The children of WILLIAM MONTGOMERY and Nancy Brawley were William, Hugh, Patterson, and Hannah.

Hugh, son of WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, was a volunteer in the War of 18l2. Moved to Rome, Georgia.

Patterson, another son, born 1793, married Sarah, daughter of Honorable Abram Brower of Randolph County. Their children were William, Caroline, Daniel, Nathaniel, and Nancy Katharine.

Hannah, daughter of WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, married James Benefield of Guilford County. Went to Tennessee. Her husband, James Benefield was in the War of 1812 and fought under General Jackson at New Orleans. Afterwards moved to Martin County, Indiana.

William, son of WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, was born on North Buffalo in l789. He was a physician and politician, was in the convention to amend the State Constitution in 1835; served as Senator from Orange County in the Legislature 10 years and 6 years in Congress. He laid off and named the town of Liberty, in Randolph County. He married Sarah Albright in 1817 and their children were Nancy Elizabeth, Sarah Louisa, David, Delihat, James Rudy, Martha Harriet, Cornelia, Mary, and William Van Buren.

Nancy Elizabeth Montgomery married General Benjamin U. Trollinger in 1832. Their children were Sarah, Mary Frances, and John Montgomery.

Mary Frances Trollinger married James Madison Elder in 1867 and their children were Delos Montgomery, Benjamin Trollinger, and Walter.

Delos Montgomery Elder married Lora Perry in 1902. Their children were Walter Clifton, James Perry, Delos Montgomery, Fannie Glenn, William Taft, and Sally Crystabelle.

Researched by Sally Crystabelle Elder Welch (Mrs. J. T.), descendant,

Generation Two

Frances Montgomery, born circa 1760 in Lancaster County, PA,  and married William Buchanan circa 1780, probably in North Carolina.  I have no proof of either her birth year, location of birth or if she did marry William Buchanan in PA.  William Buchanan married Catherine McCaleb in Guilford County, NC per Guilford County marriage bonds in 1773.

Frances Montgomery and William Buchanan had the following children: (some of these children could be by William Buchanan's first wife, Catherine McCaleb whom he married first in 1773).  My cousin Rose told me this:

Regarding which Buchanan children belong to which mother.  In going through my files I found a record from Rockingham County Historical Society sent me in May 2002, part of a paper by GSRS member Rachel P. Rawls. It stated: " Rebecca Buchanan Petree was originally from Rockingham Co., the daughter of William and Frances Montgomery Buchanan.

Court records in Rockingham Co. indicate that in 1799 Hugh Patrick (probably their cousin) was appointed guardian for John, Hannah and Rebecca Buchanan, orphans of William Buchanan. Earlier, in 1794, James Buchanan chose Ebenezer Patrick; George chose James Patrick; and James Patrick was appointed guardian for Samuel and William Buchanan. Their mother retained guardianship of the three youngest children "------ From the above Frances must be the mother of John, Hannah and Rebecca, and possible there were three younger children.
