Buchanan Coat of Arms

Generation One

Samuel Buchanan, born circa 1705, Ireland, Scotland, Pennsylvania?  No data ~ married unknown.  Several of these children went to South Carolina after North Carolina.  My line, William remained in NC, and his son, John did as well.  I visited their graves and photographed both of their stones, photos below.

Generation Two

William BUCHANAN2 (Samuel BUCHANAN1) was born circa 1735 possibly in Lancaster Co, PA and died in 1796 in Rockingham Co., NC.  I have his estate records below.

William Buchanan married FIRST to Catherine MCCaleb 5 MAR 1773 in Guilford Co., NC, (source:  Guilford County, marriage bonds, copy below left) daughter of Catherine unknown and UNKNOWN. Catherine must have died between 1773 and around 1780 when William married second to Frances MONTGOMERY, who was born 7 May 1764But if Frances' birth year was 1764 and she got married around 1780, then she would only be around 16 yrs old.... so, who knows if her birth year is accurate.

William, his son John and collateral families lived in the Haw River area in North Carolina, see map on right.

Frances Montgomery was the daughter of William Montgomery and Hannah Patterson.  See what I've collected on the Montgomery line here.

I found on Ancestry.com (someone's tree) that Frances Montgomery and William Buchanan married 23 Feb 1780 in Lancaster, PA, this is incorrect as I have documentation supplied by a cousin indicating Frances' parents, Hannah Patterson and William Montgomery migrated to NC from PA around 1770-71, they were on their way to Abbeville, SC and stopped off in Guilford, where they were convinced to stay by friends who were already there.

A marriage record for William Buchanan and Frances Montgomery has not been found yet in North Carolina and could have been performed by "banns".

William died sometime before March 4, 1796 when he his wife is mentioned as a widow.  He would have been in his 50s or 60s.

Children of William BUCHANAN and Catherine MCCALEB and Frances Montgomery are:

i.

Elizabeth BUCHANAN (very likely Catherine's daughter, she names a daughter Catherine) was born 9 JUL 1776, and died 28 FEB 1841 in Stokes Co., NC.  She was buried in the Frost Cemetery, located in Meadows Township of Stokes Co., NC, on the east side of Hawkins Rd., # 1973, south of a creek and up the driveway of a new log house. Cemetery is under a grove of trees.  She married Ezekiel FROST 10 FEB 1798 in Rockingham Co., NC, son of James FROST. He was born 8 JUL 1771/2 in PA, and died 20 DEC 1835 in Stokes Co., NC. He was buried in Frost Cemetery.  Children of Elizabeth BUCHANAN and Ezekial FROST are: Catherine Biting FROST and James FROST.

iv

Hannah BUCHANAN, (Frances' daughter? her mother was named Hannah and this would fit) born circa when? and died UNKNOWN. She married John COLLINS 24 NOV 1796. (if Hannah is Frances' daughter, she would have to be born after their marriage of 1780, but we have no proof of Frances' marriage date to William Buchanan.)

Eva Rebecca BUCHANAN (Frances Montgomery's daughter) was born 15 SEP 1784 in Rockingham Co., NC, and died 24 JUL 1843 in Germanton, Stokes Co., NC.  She was buried near King, Stokes Co., NC. She married John Henry PETREE 1812 in Germantown, Stokes Co., NC, son of Johann Heinrich PETREE and Margaretha Barbara Magdalena ZIMMERMAN. He was born 1783, and died 9 MAR 1868 in Germanton, Stokes Co., NC. He was buried in a small graveyard 3 or 4 miles from Germanton, NC.  Children of Eva Rebecca BUCHANAN and John Henry PETREE are: i. Elizabeth PETREE was born 1814, and died BEF 1866, ii. Margaret F. PETREE was born ABT 1815, she married Charles ANDERSON 18 FEB 1856 in Stokes Co., NC., iii. William Henry Harrison PETREE was born 25 SEP 1815 in Germanton, Stokes Co., NC, and died 14 JAN 1897 in Pleasant Site, AL., iv. Riley Frost PETREE was born 28 JUL 1820 in Germanton, Stokes Co., NC, and died 15 JAN 1902 in Germanton, Stokes Co., NC., v. Ezekiel Buchanan PETREE was born 27 AUG 1825 in Germanton, Stokes Co., NC, and died JAN 1887 in Germanton, Stokes Co, NC, vii. Hannah Rebecca Susan PETREE was born 13 JUL 1829 in Germanton, Stokes Co, NC, and died 27 FEB 1876.

In 1832 after Rebecca Buchanan and Henry Petree had been married for twenty years, she petitioned the court for divorce from "bed and board." Neighbors and relatives testified in court that Henry had poured whiskey on her and pushed her from the house. Evidently Henry was an alcoholic and very abusive man. Rebecca stated in court that she had left him several times before but had always returned because of the children. The court granted the divorce and ordered Henry to pay her twenty-five dollars per year for support of the children. Evidently he refused to do this because in 1834 she was back in court, asking that the decree be enforced. Henry's brother, Solomon, testified that Henry had at least two hundred dollars, a mare, a wagon, beds, other items but that he had left the area with his oldest son, rather than meet his obligations.

Rebecca's sister, Elizabeth and her husband Ezekial Frost, helped her and her children. In fact, when Elizabeth died, she left three hundred dollars to Rebecca to be loaned out and interest to be paid to Rebecca in her lifetime. Divorce decrees in those days meant that neither party could remarry until one died. Rebecca died 24 Jul 1843 and is buried in a graveyard near King, NC. She will be remembered as a lady of great courage, brave enough to refuse to live with an abusive man and intelligent enough to not want her children exposed to such behavior. After her death, Henry returned to the area and remarried.

Following letter received in 1993 from Rachel Rawls, MD concerning Petree:

2209 The Circle
Raleigh, NC 27609
September 20, 1993

Dear Jo,

The divorce papers for Rebecca Petree are enclosed. It was an interesting case. I think I mentioned earlier that when Elizabeth Buchanan Frost died, she left Rebecca the income from $300 which stated: "shall be loaned out on interest and the interest owing thereof be paid or given to my sister, Rebecca Petree yearly during her natural life, and after her decease the said three hundred dollars to be equally divided between John H. Bitting, my son-in-law and Elizabeth B. Frost and James Frost my grandchildren" This will was witnessed by Riley F. Petree, _________Gibson and J. Gibson. The Will was probated March 1841, apparently.

I remember, as I wrote you, my grandfather telling me that his father, an uncle, and I think his older brother, fought with the Union Army. You have to take this with reservations because it has been more than 50 years since I heard it, and my grandfather was born after the Civil War so it had to be at least second hand with him. It was the Uncle and I don't know which .... that was captured by the Confederates, and nearly hanged using a grapevine, however the vine broke. He was then imprisoned. When he was released at the end of the War he only weight 90 pounds. Riley Frost Petree was a member of the NC constitutional Convention after the Civil War - this is documented and mentioned in NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNMENT 1585-1979, issued by Thad Eure, Secretary of State, 1981. Riley Frost Petree was a delegate from District 19, Stokes Co., NC. Joseph Abbott was from New Hanover County, NC and David Heaton from Craven Co. NC. Both of them are mentioned in histories of the post war period as being "Carpetbaggers." I have relatives living in the area who probably would prefer not knowing some of these facts, and I want to get other information about the family from them later!

NOTE: Rachel May Fulton Rawls was daughter of Ernest W. and Mabel Petree Fulton and granddaughter of Joseph Abbott and Viola May Samuel Petree.

John BUCHANAN
(Frances' son) born 1786, according to his tombstone in Rockingham Co., NC, he died in 1822 in Guilford Co., NC.  He married Margaret STOKES (unproven), she died in Indiana after she had remarried to Edward Lapping.

vi

George BUCHANAN was born 1791, and died UNKNOWN. (Frances' Son).  I have no further information on either George or Samuel.

vii

Samuel BUCHANAN, born and died unknown, (Frances' Son)

Generation Two

John BUCHANAN
was born ABT 1786 in Rockingham Co., NC, and died Feb 25 1820 in Guilford Co., NC.  (these dates are from his tombstone which states he died in 1820 in the 34th year of his life, see below).  He married Margaret STOKES, (we can not find a marriage bond proving this marriage).  After John died in 1820, Margaret married second to Edward Lapping in 1825, Guilford County, NC marriage bonds.  She and most of her children and new husband, Edward Lapping migrated to the Harrison County, IN area.

John Buchanan died at the age of 34 according to his tombstone that is in the Haw River Presbyterian Church Cemetery - Williamsburg Township - located off Hwy 150 on Candy Creek Road (2627) on the south side of the road about 1/4 mile down a farm road.  The church no longer stands.  Buckhanan, J. Died 25 Feb 1820 in the 34th year of his age.

Map of Indiana area on left.  Margaret was the daughter (probably) of Thomas Stokes and Mary Norman. See the Stokes line here.

Our John Buchanan, above, died young @ 34 yrs, and this is why I'm assuming:

The Journal of Rockingham County History and Genealogy, April, 1978, Vol. III, Number 1, page. 17:

"In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Fair Grove, Benaja, and Haw River areas were periodically swept by malaria and typhoid fever. In the cemeteries of the area, many tombstones of people who died young may be observed. The late Nancy Watson of Madison collected this rhyme:

Benaja, Benaja, in the valley of chills, Bogs, Marshes, all the ills,
A more troublesome place, I'm sure you can't find, Where mosquitoes carry lanterns, when they grow blind."

From Rose:
Court records in Rockingham Co. indicate that in 1799 Hugh Patrick (their cousin (son of Mary Patrick nee Buchanan above) was appointed guardian for John, Hannah and Rebecca Buchanan, orphans of William Buchanan.

Earlier, in 1794, James Buchanan chose Ebenezer Patrick; George chose James Patrick; and James Patrick was appointed guardian for Samuel and William Buchanan. Their mother retained guardianship of the three youngest children"------

From the above Frances must be the mother of John, Hannah and Rebecca, and possible there were three younger children.

Haw River Presbyterian Church Index where our John Buchanan is buried and perhaps his father William Buchanan and his wife, Frances Montgomery Buchanan are as well....

The information for my posting tonight comes from HISTORY OF BUFFALO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND HER PEOPLE, by the Reverend S. M. Rankin, published in 1934 by Joseph J. Stone & Company in Greensboro, Guilford Co NC. No, I do not have a copy of this book - someone just sent me pp 211-212 from it, dealing with the HAW RIVER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Here is what it says:  HAW RIVER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

"This church was located on the south side of Haw River, some four or five miles east of MONTICELLO. The people of this congregation were of the same stock as the Buffalo Church, and they were closely associated, and there were often intermarriages. The names of some of the people in this congregation were Alexander, Boyd, CAREY, Denny, Ervin, Finley, Flack, Given, Green, Maxwell, Mateer, Nelson, Nickell, ROBERTSON, Russell, Smith, Starratt, Thompson, WALKER, Webb and Wilson.

"The church became divided on the subject of revivals and the use of WATTS' hymns, and after that it was gradually weakened until it was finally dropped from the roll of churches. In 1818, John MAXWELL bequeathed a small sum of money to repair the building, stating, 'if it is ever done'."

The source goes on to give the location of the cemetery, which, as stated above, is where the church once stood: "Location four miles east of MONTICELLO, N. C., off Highway U. S. No. 29, Greensboro-Reidsville, N. C."

There follows a cemetery list.

Known children of John BUCHANAN and Margaret STOKES are:

i

Thomas Stokes Buchanan, born circa 1809, 11 yrs old when father died.  (I believe this child was named for Margaret's father, Thomas Stokes (Mother was Mary Norman. My cousin Henry Buchanan in North Carolina told me that Thomas' middle name was Stokes (he has documentation proving it) and that he went to TN, then AR.

From James Drye:

Greetings Cat

Thomas's wife Emaliza Elizabeth Ellinor (many variation in the spelling of Ellinor) comes from a well researched line. I have a  book by John Calvin Head;  "Owen Cravey of Bertie District, NC and His Descendants 1720-1988" that covers the Ellinor Family.

I looked at the Buchanan line in early NC but could not figure out where Thomas belonged.  My line descends through Jesse J. S. Buchanan and his wife Samantha Marinda Bucy (the 5th child of Thomas and Emaliza).  Some of  their grandchildren were still alive when I started my research and I was lucky enough to get to talk with them.  We even had a Buchanan reunion in 1997 in Tennessee.  I have a few old pictures of my Buchanan's. I will send you some small jpgs of these.   I noticed a lot of middle names in the children of Thomas and Emaliza were S.  I always wondered if it stood for Stokes.

I descend to Thomas Stokes Buchanan Sr by the following line:

Thomas Stokes Buchanan Jr (m. Emeliza E. Ellenor) - (ggg gf)
Jesse J. S. Buchanan (m. Samantha Marinda Bucy) - (gg gf)
Vinson Crawford Buchanan (m. Mary Jane Rowlett) - (g gf)
Beula Grey Buchanan (m. George Dewey Drye) - (my grandmother)
George Edward Drye (my father)
James Edward Drye (me)

From a cousin, who descends from Thomas:

The following reference to the origins of Thomas and Emeliza was written about John William Buchanan and is from “History of Tennessee, From The Early Time To Present; Together With An Historical And A Biographical Sketch of Henry County”. p894, Published by Goodspeed Publishing Co., in 1887.

“J.W. Buchanan, a prominent citizen and farmer residing in the Twenty-second District, was born in Henry County, June 23, 1830, son of Thomas and E. Buchanan, both natives of North Carolina, the father born in Guilford County (most other records indicate Edgecombe County), 1808, and died in 1847; the mother born in Edgecombe County, in 1812, and now living with her daughter, Mrs. Allen Freeland. J. W. received but a limited education in the district schools of Arkansas and in 1858 was married to B. W. Walker, who was born in Smith County in 1833 and who died in 1860. They had two children both deceased. In 1861 he married Mary A. Edmonds, a native of Kentucky, born in 1842, and by this union had one daughter, Sallie E. Our subject located where he now lives, in 1861, and has always been an energetic enterprising man. In 1850 he began traveling in the sale of manufactured tobacco and this continued for about seven years. He is a member of the county court having been elected magistrate each succeeding election since 1870. He joined the Masons in 1852 and has many honors conferred upon him by that order. He is a Democrat in politics, and he and his wife are members of the Christian Church.”

This above biography of John William Buchanan, first child of Thomas S. and Emeliza E. Buchanan was written in 1886-1887 while John and Emeliza were still living. It would seem likely that the information came from John himself and should be accurate.

William BUCHANAN was born 1812 in Guilford Co., NC, and died in Washington County, Indiana, Feb 1877 according to Indiana death records..  He married Mahulda Austin, daughter of George Austin and Frances Martin.  William was about 8 yrs old when his father died.  This is our line.  He and his wife Mahulda are buried with several children in the Old Providence Cemetery in Washington or Orange (right on the county line) county in Indiana.  They do not have any stones, and it is this author's intent to buy them one some day.

iv

Frances BUCHANAN was born NOV 1814 in Guilford Co., NC, and died 30 NOV 1865 in Harrison Co., IN. (she was about 6 yrs old when her father died) She first married John Austin, brother to Mahulda Austin who married William Buchanan above. She married Isaac RANSOM second 30 NOV 1848 in Harrison Co., IN. He died UNKNOWN.  Frances and Isaac are found in her mother's house in Harrison county, IN after Edward Lapping died, Frances' mother's second husband, as follows:

The 1850 Federal Census for Morgan Township, Harrison County, IN, lists:
Margaret Lapping (63) as head of household, born NC
Pinckney Lapping (20), born NC
Frances Ransom (35), born NC
Isaac Ransom (27), born IN
Martha Austin (4), born IN
James W. (H ?) (11/12), born IN

Margaret Buchanan
married Edward Lapping on 21 January 1825, in Guilford County, NC. It appears that both had been previously married, according to earlier census info...if the contributor was correct about John Buchanan having a will in 1822, it would not be out of the question that his widow (Margaret) would remarry in 1825.  Edward Lapping is listed on the 1840 census in Harrison County, IN.

Francis Buchanan and Isaac Ransom had the following children:

James Ransom, born Sept 1849, Harrison County, IN
Albert Ransom, Born Circa 1851, Harrison County, IN
Pinckney T. Ransom, Born Oct 26, 1854, Harrison County, IN and died unmarried on 27 April 1927 in Spring Valley, Fillmore Co., Minnesota

Belle Ransom, born 9 December 1857, Harrison County, IN, she married Frank Haskell Gray in 1879 and she died 14 Dec 1892 in Minneapolis, MN and is buried in the Lakewood Cemetery there.

v

Hannah Buchanan
, born circa 1816/17, about 4 yrs old when her father died and she died in 1858 when she was 42 yrs old.  Hannah married Robert Clark Allgood December 18, 1834 in Orange County, Indiana and they migrated to Wayne County, Illinois.  Robert died on the 24th of December, 1853, he is buried in the Campground Cemetery, Xenia twp, Clay Co., Illinois.  It looks like they lived on the boarder between Clay and Wayne counties.  Hannah herself died in 1858, five years after Robert.  Their children were still under age when they died, and if  recall correctly, William and Mahulda took in their youngest, and then later, Alexander, Hannah's older brother, took one in.  I don't know what happened to the rest.

Robert and Hannah are in the 1840, Washington Co., Posey twp census on right.

Hi...looked into Hannah Buckhannon a bit and found info on Ancestry that states that she died in Wayne County, IL in 1858.

Robert's parents were Presley Allgood who was born in 1786 in Mechanicsburg Co., VA and his mother was Elizabeth Clark.

1850 census lists them in 11th District, Wayne County, IL -

Children:

  • Presley b.1835, IN (Robert's father's name) - 23 yrs old when mother died, 18 yrs old when father died.

  • Elizabeth b.1837, IN (Robert's mother's name) - 21 yrs w old w/ mthr died, 16 yrs old when father died.
Robert b. 1840, IN - 18 yrs old when mom died, 13 when father died.

  • Margaret b. 1843, where born not listed (Hannah's mother's name) - was 15 when mom died, 10 yrs old when father died.

  • Samuel Austin b. 22 Dec. 1845, IL (another Austin connection...was Hannah living with Wm. and Mahulda when she got married in Orange County, In in 1834 ?), 13 yrs old when mom died, 8 yrs old when father died.

  • Lewis b.1847 - 11 yrs old when mother died, 4 yrs old when father died.

William Allgood, son of Hannah Buchannan and Robert Allgood
William Allgood, son of Lewis Allgood, named for his brother, William.  I'm sure William Allgood was named for Hannah's father, William Buchanan.

Mary or Polly Buchanan, born 1790-1800 ? - I don't know anything about this Mary/Polly Buchanan.  Side Note:  there is an Elizabeth Buchanan living in Harrison County, Indiana in the 1840 Harrison County, Harrison Twp Census.  In the household is:  one female, 40-50, (born 1790-1800), one male, 15-20, one female, 10-15, one female 15-20, one female 20-30.  I don't know who she is or if she fits in our tree, but I am guessing so, but don't know for certain.

vii

Rebeckah Buchanan, born circa 1818, about two yrs old when her father died.  A Rebecca Buchanan married a Josiah Holtzclaw in Harrison County, Indiana, and I believe it to be our Rebecca.  The marriage was in 1838, approximately when our Rebecca would have been 20 yrs old or so.  I am pretty certain this is our Rebeckah...

Listed in the 1840 Harrison County Census, Josiah Holtzclaw and wife (both 20-30) are listed in Morgan Township, with a son 'under 5'.

Another cousin in Indiana recently shared with me the burial location of this Rebeckah Buchanan who married Josiah Holtzclaw, she took pictures of all the stones in this cemetery and let me download a copy of Rebecca's stone for this paragraph.  I am most grateful to this researcher for going out and taking the pictures and for sharing.  It looks like Rebecca died in 1842 when she was approximately 24 yrs old.

From her site:  The cemetery is 1/2 mile East of the town Bradford about 1 mile from the Floyd County Line. The cemetery sits to the left of the Bradford/Greenville Rd. just across the creek in the woods. It has been almost destroyed by vandals and continues to be vandalized today.

After Rebecca died in 1842, Josiah remarried to Julia Ann Clipp on March 9, 1843 (one year after Rebecca died).  Also buried in the same cemetery where Rebecca is buried, are three children of Josiah and Julia Ann Clipp.

Generation Four

William Buchanan, born circa 1812 in North Carolina, and his wife, Mahulda Austin, was born around 1816 in Kentucky,, more than likely the Jefferson County area.  These dates are based on their ages listed in the 1850 Orange County, Indiana Census, below.  In this census, William gave his birthplace as “North Carolina” and his wife Mahulda, indicated that she was born in Kentucky.  William died February 13, 1877 according to Indiana death records, he was approximately 65 yrs old.  I do not know when Mahulda died, I can not find a death record for her, and was lucky to find William's listed in a personal folder of a man who lived in Washington County back then and kept track of them for the county or for personal interest, I forget which, but this folder is now housed in the Hay Museum/Genealogical library there in Washington County where I found William's death listed.

Snyder's Chapel Cemetery - Located in Morgan Township, Harrison County, Indiana; (in the NE quarter of section 27, Township 1 S, Range 4 E); Latitude: 382349N;  Longitude: 0860306W; see Tiger Map of location.  Margaret Stokes-Buchanan-Lapping, Edward Lapping and Frances Buchanan-Austin-Ransom are probably all buried in Snyder's Chapel. I visited this cemetery in the summer of 2004, and the pictures are here.   From the plat of said cemetery:  Frances, wife of Isaac Ransom, died November 30, 1865, age 51 years and 13 days.

Mahulda is not listed that I can find, in the 1880 census, so I am guessing she died sometime after the 1870 census, but before the 1880.  Mahulda's parents were Francis Martin and George Washington Austin.  Both lines are German and the Martin line is from the Germanna Colony in Virginia.  Read about it on their separate pages.

William Buchanan Married Mahulda Austin October 12, 1834

Frances Buchanan married John Austin, Dec 27, 1833

I've recently met a cousin, Dr. Garry Buchanan, who descends from Jasper Buchanan, William's son.  He generously sent me photographs of the cemetery where William and Mahulda are buried and his information and photos are below.  I personally visited this cemetery during the summer of 2005, and the pictures are here:  New Providence Cemetery, Orange/Washington County, Indiana.

I've checked the 1840 Washington County, Indiana Census for the Buchanan Family.  I've checked all the townships and can not find them anywhere.  They were either in Orange county by then or the census taker missed them.  They were living on the boarder between Orange and Washington counties.  Map on left are the townships in Washington County, and the townships within.

This is the rundown for the Washington County, IN Providence Cemetery

Buchanan, William
Buchanan, Huldah (should be Mahulda)
Buchanan, Thomas
Buchanan, a child of Thomas
Buchanan James W.
Buchanan, Francis L.

Buchanan, Lora, 1898-1979 daughter of Isam R & Martha E. (Spence) Marshall.

The 1870 census does mention William 58, Mahalia 56, George 30, Jasper A., 25, Pinckney 20, Margaret 16, William 4 and William Allgood, 15 (William is the son of Hannah Buchanan and Robert Allgood, and Hannah was a daughter of William and Mahulda)

Jasper is living at home during this time would indicate he went back home after Polly died, before he married Francis.

Both stones are lying down and very old.  One is of Francis L., son of W. & Mahulda Buchanan, born September 1851, died May 1853.  The other one is of James W. son of W. & Mahulda Buchanan, could not get dates on James as both stones are in very poor condition.  The Buchanan's are buried in lots 28, 29, 30, 32 & 33.  There are no more stones for the Buchanan's.

The Providence Cemetery is located in Washington County, Indiana, SW corner near Hardinsburg

I don't know who the two LAGENOUR children are they have with them in the 1850 Census below.  Maybe grandchildren from one of their daughters?  I haven't looked in the census to see if there was a Lagenour family nearby.

iv

GEORGE W. BUCHANAN, BORN March 13, 1839, died Aug 13, 1880, buried in Liberty Church Cemetery in Sullivan Co., IN, next to his sister, Frances, my ancestor, above. - George is still living with his parents in the 1870 Washington County census, so I am assuming he never married. After his parents died, he must have migrated to Sullivan County to be near his sister and brother, dying in 1880 not long after.  On a trip to Sullivan County, IN, Fall,, 2007, I believe I have discovered him buried in the same cemetery as his sister, Frances Buchanan Apple.  Pictures in this paragraph.

MARGARET BUCHANAN, BORN 1854.

I've recently met two cousins that descend from Margaret and Oliver, and one of them, Allen P. Hancock, very generously donated the pictures of Margaret and Oliver for my web site.  In the picture on the right, is Andy "Paris" Hancock behind his father (my cousin Allen's grandfather) and behind Margaret is Robert, known as Bob.

Pictured on left is myself with Allen Hancock, I descend from Frances Buchanan and he descends from her younger sister, Margaret Buchanan, both children of William Buchanan and Mahulda Austin.

I recently was contacted by a descendant of Margaret with the following information:

Hi,

I believe we are distant family. My 2nd Gr. Grandmother was Margaret Buchanan. Daughter of William Buchanan and Mahalia (how it is spelled on our family tree by my Gr. Gr. Grandfather - Margaret's Husband.) All of the dates of birth for William and his wife are the same as yours except the spelling of Mahalia's (Mahulda) name. I can tell you that Margaret married Oliver Hancock and that in the 1880 census they lived within houses of each other. Oliver and Margaret had a son named Andy Paris who is My Great Grandfather.

Margaret married Oliver Hancock 25 September 1873 in Orange County, Indiana they farmed and had a total of 4 children only 2 survived. I have been told Homer died in the War but have been unable to confirm or find that information. I believe he passed away as an child since he is listed on 1880 census but not on the 1900 census. Either there was another child before Homer or after but before 1900 that also died because the only 2 surviving children were Andy Paris (known as Paris for most of his life) and his brother Robert, both farmers in Iowa.

Andy Paris, my Great Grandfather was born November 12, 1878 and married Matilda M. Van Loon on March 13, 1901, in Indiana. Their children are Carl Glen (my Grandfather) Mearl S., Elvin Paris, Gerald L. and Ferald L. (Twins) all born in Iowa. Carl Glen was born 23 February 1902 he married first Neva Grace Westbrook and had 2 children Marjorie Jauneta (married Gerald McBurney) and Otha Eugene (married Elaine Fleetner). I'm not sure if Neva passed away or the marriage ended in divorce, but in 1932 Carl married Miriam I. Buxton of Wheatland Iowa (my Grandmother) and they had 2 children Dolores I. (my mother) and Glenda Diane. Carl relocated his family to Wisconsin in 1938 and gave up farming. We still have family in Iowa living not far from my Great Grandparents home and still farming!

Margaret & Oliver are buried in the Oakdale Cemetery in Monroe County, Iowa Margaret's grave stone reads Maggie E. not even Margaret (which can be confusing) Oliver died 1929 and Margaret passed 1919. Oliver and Margaret lived within walking distance of each other, Andy Paris married a Van Loon and they are listed as neighbors on the census from 1880 to 1900, Carl Hancock's first wife was also a neighbor. My grandmother Miriam knew him when she worked in Rock Island, Illinois. I haven't been able to make that connection yet or why he was living / working in Rock Island.

Oliver P. Hancock (I am assuming the P stands for Paris) was Born in North Carolina 1852 and married Margaret E. Buchanan (I don't know what the E stands for (its Elizabeth) on 9-25-1873 in Orange County Indiana; Margaret has a date of birth of 1854 but I don't currently have the month or year (yet) Both Oliver and Margaret (Maggie) are buried in Iowa at Oakdale Cemetery (Monroe County).

Oliver died 1929 and Margaret 1919. According to the 1880 Census there were 2 children living at that time Homer C. age 4 and Andy P. age 1 both born in Indiana. Oliver and Margaret were living in Madison Township Indiana Washington county; on the 1900 census they are living in Pleasant Township, Lucas County Iowa and have again only 2 children living at home. In 1900 they still have only 2 children living at home this time it is Paris (Andy) age 21 and Robert age 15. The 1900 Census asked how many children were born and how may were still living; Margaret had 4 children and only 2 living. I can't find a record for Homer's death or for another child born between Andy and Robert or after Robert. I may have to visit Iowa again soon. In the 1910 Census Oliver is a Widower and living with his son Robert in Lucas Iowa. He never re-married and passed away 1929 in Lucas Iowa. Both Andy Paris and Robert lived near each other and were farmers in Iowa.

Andy Paris Hancock was born in Indiana, Pleasant Township Lucas County 11/12/1878. He is listed in the Federal Census' of 1910, 1920 and 1930. He Married Matilda Van Loon (Daughter of Dirk Wilhelms Van Loon and Mary Bonnett). on March 13, 1901. Their Children were Carl Glen Hancock born 2/23/1902 in Iowa, Meral Stella born January 18, 1905 married Ira Henry Weeda (or Weede) on 2-17-1932 Meral passed on 1-2-1976 and is buried in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Elvin Paris Hancock born 8-27-1910 in Iowa he never married and died 2-11-1930 and is buried in Rock Island, Illinois, Gerald Lennie Hancock born 6-26-1913 in Iowa married Mildred Elizabeth Allen 6-9-1935 in Knoxville Iowa, I assume he is still alive and my Mother believes the same. Ferald Lenford Hancock (Gerald's Twin Brother) born 6-25-1913 in Iowa married Irene Goemaat on 2-12-1935 in Knoxville Iowa, Ferald died April 1987 ( I don't have the exact date) in Knoxville Iowa.

Carl Glen Hancock married Neva Grace (everyone called her Grace Westbrook on 6-1-1923 in Jasper Iowa (death is unknown) Their children were Marjorie Jauneta born 3-15-1924; married Gerald McBurney (date?) in Rock Island, Illinois. Otha Eugene Hancock born 4-18-1926 married Elaine Fleetner on 10-30-1948 in Phillips, Wisconsin. Carl and family are listed on 1930 census for Rock Island Illinois. He didn't do farming in Illinois but was a Factory Foreman. Carl is buried at Wisconsin Memorial Cemetery (don't have a date of death my mother has all that information).
Wisconsin Cousin - Candy

From my cousin Allen who descends from Margaret and Oliver:

Margaret & Oliver's first born was Walter L. Hancock born 10-18-1874 in Orange County, Indiana. He died 12-26-1874 in Orange County, Indiana and is buried in Rigney-McIntosh Cemetery in Indiana. This cemetery is in the middle of a farmer's field. We were there several years ago. We didn't find his grave stone. The cemetery is in awful condition. Many of the stones are down and broken.

Their second born was Homer C. Hancock. He was born 6-16-1876 in Indiana and died 12-17-1891 in Iowa. He is also buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Monroe County, Iowa next to his parents.

Their third born son was Andy Paris Hancock and he was born in Orange County, Indiana on 11-19-1878 and died on 6-15-1936 in Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa and is buried in Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Marion County, Iowa. Your web site says that he was born 11-12-1878 in Indiana, Pleasant Township, Lucas County which is incorrect. He was my grandfather.

Their fourth son was Robert Miles Hancock. He was born 5-21-1885 in Iowa and died 6-9-1952 in Lucas County, Iowa and is buried in Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Marion County, Iowa.

Elvin Paris Hancock, son of Andy Paris and Mina Matilda Hancock is buried in Columbia Cemetery, Columbia Marion County, Iowa. He died in Rock Island, Illinois 2-11-1930.

x.

MATILDA BUCHANAN, BORN ABOUT 1859, Matilda is listed in the 1860 census as being one year old, she does not show up in the 1870 census and I assume she died young and is also probably buried at the Old Providence Cemetery, where Mahulda and William Buchanan are buried and several of their other children and grandchildren.  However, cemetery records do not indicate she is there.  Perhaps she was buried on their farm ~

xi.

William Buchanan, Born 1866, he must have died young, he is listed in the 1870 Orange Co., IN Census with his parents and is listed as 4 yrs old.  If this is accurate, and he is William and Mahulda's son, then his mother, Mahulda, would have been 52 when she gave birth to him.  I guess he could also be a grandson through one of the sons ~ however in this same census their William Sr's nephew, William Allgood, is living with them.  He is from William's sister, Hannah, who married Robert Allgood.  They migrated to IL and both died there fairly young (in the 1850s) and their children were farmed out to the rest of the family.  Both William Sr. and Mahulda died before 1880, William in 1877 (per Indiana death records) and I haven't found Mahulda in the 1880 census and am assuming she died before 1880 as well.  Perhaps the young son William died as well.

Notes:

Hi Catherine:  I am sure your William is from the William who died in 1795 in Guilford Co, NC but from which son I do not know.    Henry

Hi Catherine:  William married 2 times, first to Catherine McCalib/McCalip in 1773, and second to Frances Montgomery and had children by both women.  He had an estate in Guilford Co, NC in 1795.  Francis' dad had a will in Guilford Co, NC.  I think  Mary Patrick, William's sister had a will in 1808 in Rockingham Co, NC names William Jr her nephew, son of William and my Samuel Buchanan was a witness.  Henry

Hi Catherine:

Frances Buchanan Austin Ransom was the dau of John Buchanan and Margaret Stokes she married second to Isaac Ransom 11-30-1848 in Harrison Co, she was born in 11-1814 in Guilford Co, NC and died 11-30-1865 in Harrison Co, burial at Snyder's Chapel.  She married 1st John Austin in Harrison Co 12-26-1832.

Margaret Stokes Buchanan Lapping died in Harrison Co in 12-07-1860 buried at Snyder's Chapel.   William Buchanan had an estate in Guilford Co NC 1795.  William Montgomery had will in Guilford in 1796, John had a will in 1822.

Hi, Catherine:

I suspect that your William Buchanan was the brother of Frances Buchanan Austin Ransom.  Your William, born about 1812 in North Carolina, married Mahulda Austin in Harrison County, IN, October 11, 1832.

Frances Buchanan, born 11/1814 in Guilford County, NC, married John Austin 12/26/1832 in Harrison County, IN...(John Austin was the brother of Mahulda Austin, who married William Buchanan' Williams sister.)  After John Austin's death, Frances married Isaac Ransom on 11/30/1848.

The 1850 Federal Census for Morgan Township, Harrison County, IN, lists:

Margaret (Stokes, Buchanan) Lapping (63) as head of household, born NC

Pinkney Lapping (20), born NC (Pinckney (b. abt. 1830) was the son of Edward Lapping and Margaret Stokes (?) Buchanan Lapping; they also apparently had 2 daughters: Martha Ann (b. abt. 1825) and Harriet (b. abt. 1827), both of whom married George W. Smith.

Frances Austin Ransom (35), born NC
Isaac Ransom (27), born IN

Martha Austin (4), born IN (dtr of Frances Buchanan (above, and her first husband, John Austin)

James W. (H ?) (11/12), born IN (James would be the son of Frances Buchanan Austin Ransom and her second husband, Isaac Ransom.)

Margaret Buchanan married Edward Lapping on 21 January 1825, in Guilford County, NC. It appears that both had been previously married, according to earlier census info...if the contributor was correct about John Buchanan having a will in 1822, it would not be out of the question that his widow (Margaret) would remarry in 1825.

Edward Lapping is listed on the 1840 census in Harrison County, IN.

"The Lapping researcher sent me info that states Edward Lapping made land a transaction in 1847 but he does not appear on the 1850 census."

My Cousin Diana Boal provided the pictures below of her Lapping's, sons of Margaret Stokes Buchanan Lapping and Edward Lapping from whom she descends.

3 Lapping brothers left to right: Charles, Fernando (standing) and Nehemiah...
Fernando Douglas Lapping (standing) and Nehemiah B. Lapping (my husband's direct ancestor)...taken probably in the mid 1870's....Diana

According to Guilford County, NC marriage bonds William Buchanan and Catherine McCaleb were married in Guilford, NC, on 5 March 1773.  John, born in Rockingham County, NC, about 1786, died in 1820 in Guilford, NC.

Little seems to be known of several of the other descendants of William Buchanan and Catherine McCaleb/Frances Montgomery (2nd wife)...the known children seemed to have stayed in NC, except for James Buchanan (he had a daughter born in Ohio County, IN) and the children of Margaret...Buchanan Lapping, who had moved to Harrison, IN, by 1840... possibly sooner as I have not located the family in the 1830 census yet.

Anyway, I suspect it is very likely that your William is the son of John Buchanan and Margaret...Buchanan Lapping.

Thanks ..Diana

I do have a few items from newspapers and Rev. Charles Thayer's journal that might be of interest to him...(Frank Ransom Gray) Interestingly, Pinckney Lapping's son married a widowed Mrs. Gray in Mpls. ...wonder if there is any connection ?..the Lapping researcher sent me info that states Edward Lapping made land a transaction in 1847 but does not appear on the 1850 census....Diana

One more piece of interest...the Lapping info sent to me includes a note that Nellie Lapping, granddaughter of Edward Lapping and his first wife (Mary E. Jones) died in Paoli, IN, 1949 and is buried in Stampers Creek...aren't the Buchanan's also in Stampers Creek ?

Hi...I found Thomas Stokes just east of Wm Montgomery on the Guilford, NC, map....presumably near John Buckhanan, since Wm left him some land...according to some Ancestry.com sources, Thomas' parents were David Stokes and Margaret Dupree...having a daughter also named Margaret would make sense....NO one has listed a daughter, Margaret.... Diana

Hi...what I have is a marriage between Edward Lapping and Margerat (as spelled on the record) Buchanan, Guilford County, NC on 21 January 1825...I have not located a marriage yet between a John Buckhanan (or variant spellings) and a Margaret Stokes...I cannot find a Margaret Stokes among the Stokes families living in Guilford County that fits her general age (my source being info on Ancestry or Family search so far), but as I mentioned, I do have a land deal showing John Buckhanan witnessing a transaction by Thomas Stokes, Jr

Margaret Buckhannon is listed as head of household in an 1820 census for Guilford County:

1 male under 10 years
1 male 10-16 years
4 females under 10
1 female 26-45

not sure if this fits well with the info from the man in California or not...of, course, these need not all be her children....diana

Hi...I was just on the LDS Familysearch site...came across Thomas Stokes married to Mary Norman 20 January 1787 in Guilford County....this info seems to come from the local marriage records...several sources list this Thomas as being the son of David Stokes and Margaret Dupree of Virginia...it would make sense if he named his daughter after his mother, Margaret...can still find no listing of a Margaret Stokes among his children, though...nothing confirmed, but something to explore...

I am attempting to send you those land records, also taken from the Genweb site for Guilford County...these are land deeds focusing on a Ross family...a Martha Thayer has submitted this info from Guilford County records...it does show us how John Buckhanan spelled his name and most likely a pronunciation that differs from Buchanan (long "u" sound)...it places a Thomas Stokes in the area associated with John B. also... Diana

I have Pinckney Lapping's estate info from Scott County, MN, and an item in it states that a Priscilla Ransom was requesting some money from the estate...she apparently had cared for Pinckney during his illness (he died of consumption) and was to be paid a certain amount per week...on the 1870 census (this is from memory, here), the Isaac Ransom family was living on land owned by Pinckney Lapping...long ago I suspected that there was some connection between Isaac and Pinckney because of this info but I hadn't found out what, until recently....the info from Mr. Gray, stating that Pinckney Ransom (another reason I had believed there was a family connection) died in MN is correct... had looked for his death certificate but it did not contain much info that was of use for the Lapping side...anyway...

All of the info that I have in common with Mr. Gray is consistent with mine, so it seems that he is reliable...he is not certain about Margaret's last name and whether Thomas Stokes is her father or not...he seems to have no doubt that Mary Norman is Margaret's mother...I wonder why ? If you accept the naming traditions of the time (at least among the Scots-Irish) the children would be named after grandparents...

John and Margaret's sons: Thomas (after Thomas Stokes ?) and William (after Wm Buchanan ?)...their daughters: Mary (Mary Norman) and Frances (Frances Montgomery Buchanan-we know that she had a son named John Buchanan from the land sale to her and her son from Wm Montgomery)...the 2 younger daughters may or may not have family traditions...it sure fits nicely....a man named Cecil Stokes has a message on Rootsweb, I think...he advises researchers to be careful as some are claiming that Thomas Stokes is the son of David but there is no conclusive proof of that (when he wrote, at least)...that's it for now....Diana

Hi Catherine - My Buchanan line is Wm. Buchanan m. Catherine McCaleb 1773. His son James was b. NC 1780 and m. Anna Sturman in Bedford, VA. Around 1814 they were in Dearborn/Ohio Co., IN. My line stayed in IN until my Mother married and lived in Cincinnati, OH.

Evidently Wm. B. did have a second marriage as stated by Henry on your web site, because when Wm. B. died, his wife Francis is named administrator of Wm's estate along with James McCaleb. Does Henry have a marriage record of Francis and her children by Wm?

1. Division of Wm. B. lands to sons George, James, Samuel, William and John.
2. Guardianship of sons after Wm's death.
3. Widow Francis and James McCaleb administrators of Wm's estate.
4. Map of Rockingham Co., NC showing location of people, especially Wm. B. and sister Mary Patrick; churches, taverns, mills, etc.
5. Descendency charts.

When I obtained the guardianship record for George, Wm., Samuel and James Buchanan it was marked "page 350 of Rockingham County Court Minutes, Feb 1795."

Mary Jo Martin, 3740 Habberline St., Wilmington, NC 28412 has listed on Family Search.org William Buchanan b. 1752 m. Catherine Frances McCaleb. Wm.'s parents are shown as Samuel Buchanan and Elizabeth Duncan.

Another Pedigree Chart shows William Buchanan's parents as John Buchanan and Jane Trindle Russell. Pedigree goes on back to Scotland.   Note, October 2004, it is HIGHLY unlikely that this couple are the parents of my John Buchanan.  See note on this page somewhere from another researcher and what she says, apparently there were two William's which of course is highly probable.

I pulled my file on Anna Sturman who married James Buchanan.

In a posting to Genealogy.com from Marion Hopper dated 6/28/2000 I have as follows:

Anna Sturman born 16 July 1784, Lunenburg Co., VA married James Buchanan (Buchannon)(Buckhannan) 12 February 1801,
Bedford Co., VA. James was born 7 June 1780, Cumberland Co., PA. His parents: William Buchanan, born 1754, (PA or Ireland?) died 1828, Cumberland Co., PA. Catharine McCaleb (McCalbel) (McClabe) born 1764, died 1835 Cumberland Co., PA

Anna and James Buchanan are found in the 1807 Tax Records in Dearborn Co., (Indiana Territory).

Children:
Betsy Buchanan ca 1802, VA
William Buchanan b ca 19 Oct 1804, VA., md Lucinda Douglas 1, April 1827, Dearborn Co., IN
George Buchanan b 29 Nov 1806, VA
md (1) Marie Gerrand 2 May 1829 Dearborn Co., IN
md (2) Mrs. Hannah Potter, 11 Oct 1850, Ohio Co., IN
Samuel Buchanan b 31 Aug 1808 VA md Sarah Johnson, 31 Aug 1832, Dearborn Co., IN
Catharine Buchanan b 6 July 1810, VA
md Joseph Barricklow, b 1808 in PA
Martha "Patty" Buchanan b 10 May 1812, VA
(This is where the printing stopped and I have not been able to get the rest of the records)

I have Anna Sturman born same date in Bedford County, VA. I also had the James Buchanon was born in North Carolina.

I agree that W. B. and I. (F.?) B. are very likely Wm. and Frances Buchanan, especially since the I. (F. ?) B. died 5 August 1798...the included info you forwarded from Rose, sent her by GSRS member Rachel P. Rawls (I believe she is also cited on Buchanan data submitted by a Bob Newsome on Ancestry.com) explaining various guardians for the children of Wm. Buchanan is helpful...I read it as meaning that in 1794 (presumably shortly after Wm.'s death...do we have a date ?) the older children chose a guardian, his widow retained guardianship of the 3 youngest children...the widow would be Frances Montgomery Buchanan...in 1799, Hugh Patrick was appointed guardian of John, Hannah and Rebecca, because their mother died in August 1798...I don't believe that there were any other children of Wm. and Frances.

I spoke with my mother and sister-in-law, both of whom have done a lot of genealogical research, regarding Mary Tabitha Stokes Fulton naming her son John Buchanan Fulton...they both felt strongly, as you did, that it was NOT a coincidence, that he could very well be her sister's (Margaret Stokes) husband...especially since he was born in Guilford, NC in May 1820...a few months after John Buchanan's death....who got her land when she left ? Guardianship of sons does not name John. Evidently John was from the second marriage to Francis Montgomery. I have a land deed showing land deeded from William Montgomery to Francis Buchanan. Francis is to have the benefits of the land before John comes of age.

Interesting Buchanan family here in Giles, Tennessee 1860 Census

William Buchanan 45 M Overseer 610 North Carolina X  (born 1815)
Francis R. Buchanan 45 F North Carolina
William P. Buchanan 16 M North Carolina X
James G. Buchanan 14 M North Carolina X
Julia A. Buchanan 10 F Tennessee X
George H. Buchanan 8 M Tennessee
Virginia F. Buchanan 4 F Tennessee

and this Austin family is living nearby:

Sarah H. Austin 66 F Farmer 10,400 10,885 Virginia
William E. Austin 43 M Virginia
Mary E. Austin 27 F Farmer 2,000 Tennessee
Reubin J. Austin 5 M Tennessee
Emma V. Austin 4 F Tennessee
John V. W. Austin 2 M Tennessee
Orville H. Austin 1 M Tennessee
Edward H. Mathews 28 M Plasterer Virginia

Records show that when William B. died Frances B. was made administrator of his estate. Guardianship was made to James Patrick and Ebenezer Patrick for George, Samuel, William and James Buchanan. John Buchanan was not mentioned here.

Frances Buchanan was the daughter of William Montgomery. In 1793 William Montgomery gave Frances B. land between creeks Almanac and Buffalo, waters of the Haw River, Guilford Co., NC. There was a stipulation the land would be given to John B. when he became of age. John no doubt was from William Buchanan's second marriage. (I do not believe John was born in 1779).

The record I have on John is not a will, but is a transfer of land in 1822 to Margaret Buchanan after John Buchanan's death.

In August 1801 there was a division of William Buchanan's land between sons George, James, Samuel, William and John, sons and heirs of the deceased.

My husband's ancestor, Pinkney Lapping, would have been a half-brother to the Buchanan's, I am sending you a copy of a land sale from Andrew Ross to Thomas Stokes, Jr., in Guilford, NC, 1814...John Buckhanan (as he apparently signed it-there is no reference to "his mark") witnessed it....is Thomas John's brother-in-law ?  Margaret's brother ? Diana

Hi...might be making some progress on the Buchanan line....just found references to John Buckanan in deeds 1814,1815 in Guilford, NC...also mentioned in this info was Thomas Stokes....Margaret Stokes' father ? also just received a response to a query about Edward Lapping (2nd husband of Margaret Buchanan)...she has lots of info, including the info that Edward came to IN BEFORE he married Margaret in Guilford, NC...about 1824...why go back to NC to get married ? this might lead to a connection with that Alexander Buchanan who was also in IN about that same time....Diana

You might be interested in a map that I located for what would be the eastern 1/3 of Guilford County...it shows the names of landowners prior to 1800...Wm Montgomery is likely John Buckhannon's grandfather (per Rose)...he left land to Frances Buchanan, widow of Wm., to be given to her son John, when he turned of age ...... this map shows where Wm. Montgomery's farm is and also shows the 2 creeks that the land he gave to John Buchanan is near...the address is:

I looked at censuses for Guilford, NC in 1790,1800 and 1810...I should note that these are all FREE white females...

Thomas Stokes had 2 females in his household in 1790...one is given by researchers as his daughter, Mary Tabitha Stokes, born June 1790 in Guilford (per all except one source who states Orange Co., NC))...the other female could be his wife, Mary Norman Stokes (they married in 23 January 1787)

1800...Thomas has 1 female under 10...1 female 10-15...1 female 26-44 and 1 female over 45 (our Margaret Stokes who m. John Buchanan is probably one of the females)

1810...Thomas has one female 16-25 and one female 26-44 two of the females are gone...Mary Tabitha's marriage date is given as September 1, 1812, in Guilford County, NC (I have not verified this yet, but it should be in the NC marriage records)...it is therefore quite possible that the 16-25 year old female is Mary Tabitha...what happened to the other young female ? Margaret (Stokes ?) Buckhanan Lapping was born in November 1788, according to her tombstone and death /burial records ...the 1850 census lists her as 65 years (b. 1785) and the 1860 census lists her as 73 (b.1787)...there is some variance here assuming that her tombstone is the most accurate, Margaret could be the missing Stokes woman...Frank Gray stated that she married John Buckhanan about 1809, so she would not be in the Stokes census for 1810....Tabtha would fill the 1810 census for the 16-25 year old female nicely...

I also found a J. Buckaman (Buckanan ?) on the 1810 census near the Stokes and Norman families (within a page or so ) and only 6 families down from A. Ross...now Andrew Ross sold land to John Buckhanan 1814 and 1815, so this looks promising as our John Buckhanan (I am using this spelling as it seems to be how he signed it)...in this J. Buckanan household, there is: 1 male 10-15, one male 26-44, one female under 10, one female 16-25 and one female 26-44....this does not fit with the children of John Buckhanan and Margaret, but it is possible that they did not have a child until after the summer of 1810 (we are not sure of early birth dates nor a marriage date)

One other interesting piece of info...on an Ancestry site for Mary Tabitha Stokes, information from the Fulton family bible is given (Mary Tabitha Stokes married James Fulton)...this gives Mary's birth date, their marriage and children...one of their children is named JOHN BUCHANAN Fulton, born in Guilford in May 1820...hmmm....Diana

Catherine...I have just posted a message in response to one by Cecil Stokes....his ggggrandmother was Mary Norman Stokes...he seems to be a cautious researcher...I presented the info that has been given you regarding John Buckhanan and Margaret Stokes Buchanan Lapping, their children's (with John) and the info that Mary Tabitha Stokes (known daughter of Mary Norman and Thomas Stokes) and husband, James Fulton had a son named John Buchanan Fulton...we'll see if there's any response...Diana

Hi...I called the LDS center tonight and requested that they return film #2209788, NC, Guilford County, Estate Records ca 1778-1939....I plan to order Film #833280, Inventories of Estates 1820-1835...there might be more in those; I am debating on ordering Guardian Dockets, 1821-1830 (although it appears that a copy of the guardianship for each child is copied and included in John's papers)...it is possible that it will mention what relationship the guardian, Charles Stokes, is to the Buckhanan children ? It might be worthwhile to look at land sales also...the Lapping researcher implied in the data she sent me that the records showed Edward Lapping selling land "to his sons"...perhaps we would be able to come up with some such connection with the Stokes and/or Buckhanan land sales ? The dower petition of Margaret might be nice to have...it seems that after Margaret is given her dower share of John's property ( a copy of which was made and included in the estate but it is very small and difficult to read) and she is remarried, papers show up in John's estate noted "Thomas B. and others (all the kids) v. Lapping and wife" and Hance Stokes is requested to appear in court about this case...why ? Oh, heck, we probably just need to order everything ! It sure is fun, though....diana

apparently there is an estate for Thomas Stokes (most likely Margaret's father) married to Mary Norman in Guilford....about 1826 (?) so it would be in a different film than I had ordered..Diana

Hi...just got back from the LDS library....there was no will, but I did find a lot of papers in the Estate records of John Buckhannon...over 100 frames of them ! I spent most of the night just trying to read them to see what is actually in them...very difficult reading...seems that there are many papers that address the same general issues...briefly: Peggy Buckhannon, John Stokes, Thomas Stokes and James Fulton (who married Mary Tabitha Stokes) are all bonded to the county on 15 May 1820 for $2000.00 apparently to secure that Peggy Buckhannon and John Stokes (administrators of the estate of John Buckhannon, deceased) handle everything properly.

Later, documents make Charles Stokes the legal guardian of the minor children of the deceased John Buckhannan: Thomas, Wm, Francis, Polly (earlier referred to as Mary), Hannah and Rebecca.

Still later, several documents deal with Thomas Buckhanan and others (all of the children) vs. Lapping and wife...I can't figure that out at all at this point...I did copy a notice addressed to Hance Stokes that was sent in an envelope with the Thomas B. vs Lapping written on it...some sources give H. Stokes as the son of Thomas and Mary Norman Stokes....all sources seem to list a John, Charles and Thomas as their children...I must do more checking, but I am very comfortable with Margaret/Peggy being the daughter of Thomas Stokes and Mary Norman....quite exciting but also quite a challenge ! diana

Re: Catherine McCaleb. My line is from Wm. Buchanan and Catherine McCaleb to son James Buchanan who m. Anna Sturman and had daughter Matilda Buchanan 1819 m. to Wm. Watson Wilber, etc.

I have copies of the following:

Marriage application of Wm. Buchanan and Catherine McCaleb

Division of Wm. Buchanan's land after his death to sons George, James, Samuel, William and John.

Guardianship of sons after Wm. Buchanan's death to James Patrick and Ebenezer Patrick.

Administration of Wm. Buchanan's estate granted to Francis Buchanan widow and James McCaleb who entered into bond with Hugh Lynch and Ebenezer Patrick for surety. Catherine must have had a second name. I know Catherine's mother was also named Catherine McCaleb.

I have a large map "Rockingham Co., NC Historical Documentation" showing location of people, churches, taverns, mills, etc. This shows location of William Buchanan's land and neighbors Jonas Frost and Ebenezer Patrick who had land grants dated 1780. Under William Buchanan's name is (Tanyard). I do not know what that refers to.

Catherine McCaleb, mother of Catherine (Francis) McCaleb Buchanan lived only about six miles away on a land grant dated 1780. James McCaleb (I assume Catherine Buchanan's brother) had a mill close to his mother.

For years my Mother believed Wm. B. was son of John Buchanan and Jane Russell.

The sources you have shown seem well documented. Do you have the proof on Samuel Buchanan b. 1730 m. to Elizabeth Duncan being parents of William Buchanan married to Catherine McCaleb?

Hoping to hear from you. Rose Steer

Title: Ancestors of John Robert Newsome, Jr. - submitted to Rootsweb.com by Bob Newsome JRN2217@aol.com

If William Allgood is living with the Buchanan's, it sure would seem like perhaps William (his namesake ?) and Mahala could be grandparents...the Margaret Stokes you referred to in Chalkey's might be Margaret Dupree Stokes who several people have stated is the mother of Thomas Stokes who married Mary Norman and had, it appears per the 1800 census, an as yet unnamed eldest daughter...sure seems that if it is true, Thomas would name his first daughter after his mother...we then have Margaret Stokes who leaves Thomas's household before the 1810 census (married to John Buchanan about then ?)...it all fits, just can't prove it yet...

I've been doing some more internet "digging"...if you go to Ancestry.com, give the name Tabitha Stokes as the ancestor to search (country: US, State: all) you will get about 38 results...most seem to be copies of the others, but the 4th from the BOTTOM on the first page is from a Robert D. Morris...he has his info noted, from bibles, etc. ...Mary Tabitha Stokes is almost certainly Margaret Buchanan's younger sister...I am trying to figure out who her other siblings were and compare that to the info on the estate papers at LDS...I am going there tonigh and hopefully another night this week to try to finish up what I need to get from that info so that I can return the film so that you can order it ...

the film # is 2209788 titled :Estate Records (J. Brown - J. Burton) Guilford County, North Carolina ca. 1778-1933, 1939-1942

I did see the posting you forwarded...lots of good info in there...one researcher, Dawn Driskell, warns that there were 2 Thomas Stokes in Guilford, both married to a Mary...she has posted info on the Mississippi genealogy site for Kemper County...several Stokes sons went there and I believe that they are brothers of Margaret...I am still somewhat confused by all of these people and who belongs to whom and where they went, etc...also collecting census records on them to try to sort some of it out...

there was at least one page in the microfilm among John's estate papers that witnesses stated was his handwriting (an agreeement to pay back a loan by a certain time)...would you like a copy of that or wait until you get the film and copy what you want to then ? (Patience is not one of MY virtues !!)

Hi...I just got a message that the LDS library has more films for me to check out...I'll go next week...I hope to at least verify what Frank Gray lists as John and Margaret's children...

I finished browsing through ALL of the Rootsweb Mailing lists on Buchanan (phew)...is the Henry on that list likely to be the Henry who you have posted on your site with info on Wm. Buchanan ? Either way, he seems to have a lot of Buchanan info...I plan to e-mail him to see if he knows of Margaret Stokes...I also came across your message urging people to try to stop the Iraqi War...good for you !!!  I'll reserve any further comment at this time other than to say that I will support John Kerry this year...
Yes, Minnesota can get VERY humid...this has been a strange summer...unpredictable, alternately cool and hot, dry and saturated...Our trip was great and I will send you photos, I promise...with Monday and Sunday night football on, I will have evenings to catch up on things...I had expected to have time this past summer but it seems to have been my "lost summer"...I literally did not accomplish anything...glad to back to school and a routine again !

Hi...just got back from the LDS library....there was no will, but I did find a lot of papers in the Estate records of John Buckhannon...over 100 frames of them ! Hi...I am finished with the film at LDS and will ask them to send it back so that you can get it...I have been going over what I copied and could use another document or two as a cross reference as to what the heck some of these might be about/how to interpret the significance...but I'll let  you have a go and maybe do that bit for us...I have been making copies and sorting out signatures, census records, etc, and will be sending you a packet in a few more days...so far, I have the names of John, Thomas, Charles and Hance Stokes on documents in the file of John Buckhanan's estate...I am trying to determine which of them migrated together, first to Alabama and then to Mississippi...more later.....welcome back !! diana OH...got a reply from Henry...

Hi...thanks for forwarding the info on LDS films fro Rockingham County...I haven't had time to look really closely at them yet...please go ahead and order any that seem to catch your eye...in addition to Stokes and Buchanan, I would like anything about Lapping/Lappin...I am sure that there was another, older son who died after he was married in about 1833...there could well be a probate/estate record for him (there is a widow Betty Lappin in Rockingham in 1850 with a son named Francis...she was apparently a Cornwall/ Cornwall from VA)...maybe I should order that one...hmmm...

ANYWAY...looking quickly at the Rootsweb mailing list for Stokes this morning, I found one from Cecil Stokes. Jr. (who seems to be a pretty cautious researcher) who states that his ggrandfather, Thomas Norman Stokes (son of Thomas and Mary Norman) had brothers Charles and John, possibly others....those 3 names are the ones we have confirmed to be helping Margaret with John Buckhanan's estate ! more later....diana

..if you go to Family Treemaker, message boards, Stokes surname and then search for guilford nc, you should get about 8 results....of those, several seem to be very helpful with our line of Stokes...apparently there is an estate for Thomas Stokes (most likely Margaret's father) married to Mary Norman in Guilford....about 1826 (?) so it would be in a different film than I had ordered...perhaps you can find that when you to to LDS...good luck....diana

Hi...found this today.....from: History of Buffalo Presbyterian Church and Her People by Rev. S. M. Rankin  address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/BuffaloChurchMembers3.html

(the Gilchrist name shows up on the papers that I sent you from John's estate):

"John Gilchrist, the son of William, of Lancaster County, PA, was here in 1766....In 1788 William Gilchrist of Lancaster County, Pa. gave John the 640 acres on Reedy Fork on which John was then living. His wife was Jean and their children were John, William, Robert , Samuel, and three daughters, one of whom, Hannah, married William Montgomery, Sr.

"..."William Montgomery lived on Buffalo Creek nine miles east of the Church, before the Revolutionary War, in which he was a soldier. His children intermarried with members of Buffalo and they must have been members of the congregation."

"Samuel Fulton lived 4 or 5 miles NE of the Church in 1787." (Mary Tabitha Stokes married James Fulton)

Witnesses at the church trials 1773-1796. These trial manuscripts are on microfilm at the State Archives: Montgomery, Elizabeth

      "     , Mrs. Hannah
     "      , Hannah
"      , Mary ( these names all match up with Wm. Montgomery's wife or daughters)

the LDS film number for the Buffalo Presbyterian Church records, Church minutes and register, 1777-1925 is:  FHL US/CAN Film # 833296

you might find a bit more in there but apparently the recorded earliest marriages, etc. are in the 1830's...the minister earlier than that time was Rev. David Caldwell  who founded it in the 1770's and was minister until 1820...I know that there is a national Presbyterian Church headquarters in PA which might have records from this minister...

this info certainly supports the coming from PA theory but doesn't explain why Wm. Buchanan and Hannah Montgomery would have gone back to PA to get married ?

I just ordered 2 films: Settlement of Estates 1820-1844 Guilford County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions LDS # 0019069 and Guardian Dockets 1821-1830, 1822-1850, etc. Guilford Superior Court LDS # 0833279 hope they can confirm something ! Diana

am confused by the lawsuit/Writ of Error brought by James Brannock against Margaret and  Edward Lapping...her dower application was clearly approved in 1822 (a lady at LDS told me that, without a will from her husband, a widow was entitled to 1/3 of his land)...on a visit last week, a different LDS volunteer suggested that perhaps Margaret was trying to sell her dower land and the heirs were challenging that...this was 5 years later, 1827...who is James Brannock ? had John owned him money which was not paid ?  there were many papers for claims against John's estate in which Margaret and/or sometimes John Stokes by himself appeared in court to plead no assets...I did not copy them all; maybe I should have...but need to set some limits.

I tried looking up James Brannock in NC and only found a marriage in Rockingham and a census note that he lived in Guilford in 1820..I had hoped to find that he was married to a Stokes/Buchanan but no such luck (have you looked at Ancestry lately ? they have a new page which only shows info that you can purchase; I will look more closely to see if I can find the World Connect/ Tree section somehow....

Thanks for sending me the copies of the papers I mailed you...it IS much easier to read on the computer screen...it seems, however, that we have gotten one of the most scribbly hand writers in Guilford County to have recorded our info ! Must get ready for work...I will check my info some more and let you know again what area I have ordered film for...has to do with guardians and I believe with the Superior Court records, hoping to figure out what the lawsuit was about ! I also jotted down some info on land records in hopes of pursuing the Stokes, but have not ordered anything on those yet....diana

William Buchanan and Mahulda Austin were married on October 11, 1832 in Harrison County, Indiana.  (Sidelight: read about the Battle of Corydon during the Civil War in Harrison County here.)

I have checked most of the 1840 Harrison County, IN Census for William and Mahulda, and haven't found them yet.

Generation Five

This is my line's "brother" (Alexander) and since I know about him; and have his picture;  I've included it below.

ALEXANDER BUCHANAN (WILLIAM), born circa 1834, and died December 20, 1914 in Farmersburg, IN, he was about 80 yrs old and served in the Civil War.  He married MARTHA EASTER APPLE September 14, 1865 in Orange County, Indiana.

In the 1870’s, Alexander Buchanan (France’s brother) migrated to Sullivan County, Indiana, in 1865 he married Martha Easter Apple, the widow of the Moses Apple who died in the Civil War, (he actually could have lived according to some records- Moses Apple that is), who was a descendant of the Thomas Apple that came to Indiana from North Carolina (almost all the Apples in Indiana were from Guilford County, North Carolina).

Martha and Alexander had three children:  Melinda, William and Elzoria.  Later the couple had John, Frances and Pinckney.  Pinckney at one time was a postmaster at “Corners” a settlement in ___________.  Aunt Ethel remembered him as an old man.  He was called “Pink”.  Alexander and Martha and Pinckney are all buried in Westlawn Cemetery in Farmersburg.

Children of ALEXANDER BUCHANAN and MARTHA APPLE are:

Fifth Generation, Continued

FRANCES BUCHANAN (Samuel, William, John, William) was born circa 1836 and died circa 1914 in Sullivan county, Indiana.  She married JOHN WESLEY APPLE August 09, 1854 in Orange County, Indiana, son of WILLIAM APPLE and CATY SMITH. He was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, and died March 04, 1896.  John is buried in the Liberty Church Cemetery in Sullivan County Indiana.  We cannot find Frances' grave, and she might be buried beside her husband with no stone, we don't know.
