Our Austin Line

Our Austin Line:  I have obtained a good deal of information from my cousin Gordon K. Durnil to whom I am very grateful.  He is descended from Lucinda Austin, Sister to my Mahulda Austin and it was Gordon who gave me the information on the Austin line as well as the picture of Lucinda Austin, sister to my line and it is below.

From Gordon:  "My great, great grandmother was Lucinda Austin Kay, the sister of Mahulda Austin.  My grandmother was raised by Lucinda and named after her - Edith Lucinda Kay.  I don't know if Lucinda Austin's first name was Edith, but that combination of names came down to my sister.  I know that Mahulda married William Buchanon on Oct 11, 1832 in Harrison County, IN, but not much else...

Generation One

Our line begins with John Austin who was born circa ____ in Kentucky, (probably).  John married unknown.  Note:  there is a John Austin listed as a Pensioner in Oldham County, KY in 1832 (Virginia Line).  He is listed as 98 yrs old making him born in 1734.  This very well could be 'our' John Austin, father of George, but I don't know if he is or not, more research needs to be done.  Oldham is next to Shelby and Jefferson Counties in KY.

Note:  Shelby County, KY Records:  An indenture dated April 1, 1803 of John Austin of Shelby County that "puts his son George Austin apprenticed to George Shelladicy" for 4 years.  Among other things, George Austin is "not to commit fornication nor contract marriage" during his service.

From Jefferson County, Kentucky there is this John Austin listed in the 1810 census, my Hall, Thixton, Bell, Dunbar line were also in this area and it wouldn't surprise me if this isn't my John Austin, father of Mahulda.

John Austin | 0 2 2 0 1 | 2 2 1 1 0 | 0 | 0 | A235 - which translates to:

two males 10-16
two males 16-25
one male 45-up (husband)

two females under ten
two females 10-16
one female 16-25
one female 26-45 (wife)

John Austin, born in ? and unknown had the following known children:

i.

George Washington Austin, Sr. born circa 1788??  He married Frances Martin, daughter of Nimrod Martin and Francis Hopwood.  They married on September 15, 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky.

George Washington Austin
and Frances Martin were married on September 15 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky.  Research indicates that Francis Martin Austin married Casper Eslinger on 3 Dec 1826 in Harrison County, Indiana, BK 2, age 216.  In document on left; George Austin is the administrator for Frances Eslinger upon her death (I am assuming this is her son George below).

iii.

iv.

v.

Lucinda Austin, born 5 March 1819 in Indiana.  Pictured here with her husband John Standolph Kay.  Lucinda was my maternal 5th great aunt.  Lucinda Austin Kay, is buried in Kay Chapel with her husband John Standolph Kay who donated the land for Kay's Chapel (near Fredericksburg in Washington County).  Fredericksburg is in Posey Township which (without looking at a map) is due west of Howard Township. Beck's Mill is Howard Township and there is a terribly winding road between Beck's Mill and Fredericksburg. Beck's Mill was a popular picnic area where my mother and father courted in the summer of 1914.

Fredericksburg is on Highway 150 several miles north of Palmyra (where 150 and 135 cross). John Standolph Kay and Lucinda Austin Kay are not buried in Fredericksburg Cemetery (his son, my g. grandfather is). John and Lucinda and most Kays are buried at Kay's Chapel, which is on Highway 150 between Fredericksburg and Palmyra.

Austin Origin

A Coat of Arms was granted to a William Edward Osteen a parliamentary Senator and Admin Line Officer. He was an old English Patriarch of Penbrokeshire, England. Descendents descended to Scotland, Ireland, & N. Amer during the succeeding centuries. A Coat of Arms was granted in 1506.

Possibly secularized Augustinian Frairs at the time of the Reformation and dissolution of the monasteries in England - the surname is rare or even absent before 1550. Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales speaks of someone who 'did swink and toil as Austin bit' that is as St Augustine orders. Friars of the Augustinian Order were known as Austin Friars.

Submitter: George Austin

Mahulda Austin married William Buchhanon, from here go to the Buchanon line.
