The Old Providence Cemetery located
at the end of Providence Hill Road northwest of Hardinsburg. Section
28, Town 1 North, Range 2 East. The land for the M. E. church and
cemetery was given by Thomas Sherwood and wife, Elizabeth, in 1844.
Church records state there was not a rainy day while the church was under
construction. One day, near the end of construction, a wild turkey
flew over the site and was captured by Thomas Sherwood. The turkey
was prepared by the women folk who gathered for dinner. Later that
day, while eating this fine dinner, members decided the church should be
called Providence for the many blessings received while constructing it.
The cemetery was laid out by John Marshall, Valentine Mattox, "Aunt Till"
Mattox, Thomas Clements, and William A. Hulgan. Many graves have no
stones and the undertaker's markers have long since faded away.

their children. A cousin and I hope to place a stone on their graves
