Our Swaggert Line

Almost certainly German, but haven't taken the line back that far yet.  Could have come from Schweigardt.

I've seen this name spelled several different ways; Swigart, Swaggert, Swagerd, etc.  This line came from Ohio, before Illinois, and I strongly suspect that they might have come from Pennsylvania before Ohio, but further research needs to be done.

Our George Swaggert ended up in Watseka, Illinois (Iroquois County, after being born in Akron, Ohio in 1826.

Pennsylvania County MapSee a history of the area in Pennsylvania where I believe the Swigart's came from here See notes on this line that I've collected and may hold the clue to my Swigart line's ancestry.

"Their homes were log cabins. The fireplaces often occupied  a whole end of the cabin. (If you've ever lived through a Northern Ohio winter you know why!)  The fireplaces were stone held in place by mortar or clay.  Chimney's were the same or made of ironwood sticks.  Logs from 6-10 feet were burned in these fireplaces. An iron kettle hung over the fireplace in which cooking was done.

Furs and quilts kept the settlers warm at night. Light was from candles and candle dipping was a common household chore. Hogs and sheep were precious in this area.  It was only with great expense that they were brought to this area.  Hog hides were prized as leather. Wolves and snakes were a great fear of the women.  Rocky sections were full of Rattlesnakes.  In several areas clubs were formed for the killing of these snakes.  Schools were also log cabins.  Two short terms of school were held; a summer term and a winter term.  They walked at least 5 miles to get to school."

The Swigart name and it's variations show up in Ohio around the turn of the century, 1800. There were in about five counties including Richland, Wayne, Summit, Medina, Stark and perhaps one or two others.  There is a cemetery named the Swigart Cemetery on Swigart Road.

KYSER CEMETERY a.k.a. SWIGART CEMETERY (published in Vol 2, pp 39-41) Located on Swigart Road west of Manchester Road. This cemetery came into use by at least 1848 and is now maintained by the township trustees.  I believe this is in Stark County.  Akron, Ohio is in Summit County, Ohio

Notes from Stark Co., OH

JOHN SWIGERT, hardware dealer, Bloomville, was born in Franklin County, Penn., March 6, 1817. His parents, George and Elizabeth (Small) Swigert, afterward became citizens of this county, settling on their farm in Scipio Township in 1845, where they resided until George Swigert's death in 1856. His widow died in Bloom Township in 1873. Our subject was married, in 1839, to Miss Maria I. Smith, of Franklin County, Penn., and to this union were born seven children, of whom four are now living: William, Mrs. Hattie Ogden, Mrs. Florence Moore and Frederick G. The deceased are Mrs. Blanche Tabor, Ann Rebecca and Mrs. Jennie Koller. Mrs. Swigert departed this life August 18, 1884, she was a lady of estimable, Christian character, and her loss was mourned by a large circle of friends.

Mr. Swigert followed his trade as carpenter and joiner until 1843, when he came to Ohio, and after living a few months in Ashland, located on a farm in Scipio Township, this county; kept hotel at Republic, Ohio, from 1846 to 1850. In 1852 he took a trip to California, remaining there three years. He then resided on his farm until 1872; when he made a permanent location in Bloomville, where he has carried on his present business ever since. Mr. Swigert keeps a general line of hardware, stoves, tin ware, agricultural implements, watches, clocks, jewelry and silverware. He has built up an extensive establishment with a large trade in the surrounding community. Since coming here Mr. Swigert has added very materially to the improvement of the town. In 1873 he built the Swigert Block on the southeast corner of Marion and New Haven Streets, and in 1881

Picture of George Swagart's tombstone in the Body Cemetery outside of Watseka, IL (click to enlarge).  Our line begins with one George Swagart, who was born in Akron, Ohio, on March 8, 1826.

His obituary dated, February 21, 1906, Wednesday reads as follows:

Came to This County in 1828 (written in 1905)

George H. Swagart Came to Illinois with George Lyman when the Country was Unsettled.

George H. Swagart, one of the earlier settlers of this part of Illinois, died in West Watseka last Friday at the advanced age of 79.

George H. Swagart was born in Akron, Ohio, March 8, 1826.  At an early age he was left an orphan by the death of his parents and was adopted by George Lyman, who came to this county when he was two years old and when there were but two log cabins in this vicinity.  Mr. Swagart grew to manhood in this vicinity and was married in 1850 to Julia Ann Page, who died in 1880.

To this union five children were born two of whom survive, Mrs. Georgia Swaggert Plankell and Miss Fannie Swaggart.  When war broke out (the Civil War) he moved to Kansas and a year later back to Illinois, locating at Decatur.  Soon after he came back to Watseka, where he has since lived with the exception of the time he lived on his farm south of town.  He had lived continuously in town for 14 years.

Mr. Swagart joined the United Brethren church 45 years ago and was a religious, prayerful man, quiet and unassuming, living at peace with his fellow beings.  His daughter Miss Fannie, lived with him all her life until two years ago when he became too feeble to work, whereupon he went to live with his daughter Mrs. Plankell.

Besides the two daughters, nine grandchildren and five great-grand children survive.  The grandchildren are, Mrs. Julia Smith, Wiley and Fay Plankell, Mrs. Maude Vliet, Mrs. Lydia St. John, Roy and Phelda Houser, Lottie and Grace Houser, Clarence Vliet.  The great-grandchildren are Clarence and Gladys Vliet, Eva and Henry St. John, Josephine Smith.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Friends church, conducted by Rev. Jones.   The remains were placed in Oak Hill. (the obit says Oak Hill, but I found he and his wife at the Body Cemetery, don't know if it was once named Oak Hill or not, there is a hill in the cemetery, so it could have been named this).

Maude Swaggert and her family

I believe that our Swigert's came from Pennsylvania too, probably from the same place that George Lyman came from, Union County, Pennsylvania or perhaps from Lancaster or Bucks Counties in PA.  This area is not far from where they ended up at in Ohio.

George Lyman
died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. D. George, near

Mr. Lyman emigrated to Iroquois county in 1837.
