MARGARET EASLEY, DAUGHTER OF ROBERT EASLEY THE IMMIGRANT

AND HER HUSBANDS THOMAS DUPRAY AND JAMES WATSON.

1.3 Margaret Easley, daughter of Robert and Ann (Parker) Easley, was probably born c. 1686-1792. She m. (1) before 1711, Thomas Dupray, as is indicated by her father's will. Traditionally, it has been said that Thomas Dupray was born in France and came to Virginia in 1699 with Phillippe de Richebourg and others. Mrs. John M. Jones (Susan Depree Jones) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, states that this has not been proven and seems less and less probable. Other researchers on the Dupray line are Mrs. Brady McCulloch, Box 293, Huntsville, Texas 77340, and Mrs. Homer Neisz, 485 Maple St., West Lafayette, Indiana 47906.

Margaret Easley had more than one child by her marriage to Thomas Dupray, as indicated by the Henrico Co., Va. Orphans' Court Book, transcribed by Pauline Pearce Warner, p. 109. Thomas Dupray died before 1725, and Margaret (Easley) Dupray remarried before 5 October 1725 to James Watson, as evidenced by the Orphans' Court Book. (Joyce Lindsay, Henrico Co. Marriages, transcribed the name of the second husband as James Walton, but a search of the original record by Charles Hughes Hamlin confirmed the name of the second husband as James Watson. There was a James Watson listed 1746 in Goochland Co., Va. with 3 tithes. It is not know if it was the same man, nor has an estate been located with will or administration. It is not known if there were children by the second marriage.

Weisiger, Colonial Wills of Henrico Co., Va., Vol. I, p. 80, "Henrico Co. Wills & Deeds 1710-1714," p. 20, shows the will of Thomas Paine, 29 April 1710, witnessed by Susannah Howlett, Margrea Deupey, Thomas Howlett. Recorded 1 August 1710.

The only other court record of Margaret Easley is in 1720, when she witnessed the will of John Barnes in Henrico Co., Va., as Margaret Dupraye. (This John Barnes was the first husband of her future sister-in-law, Sarah (Raibone) Barnes.)

As background on the Dupray family, there is a will of Jean/John Dupray, 17 November 1734, Henrico Co., Va. He mentions a brother Lewis Dupray (who had a wife Larance and was in Isle of Wight Co., Va., in 1719 and 1720). These were possibly brothers of Thomas Dupray Sr., but were too old to be children of Thomas and Margaret (Easley) Dupray.

There was a Francis Dupray, Inventory, March 1736, Henrico Co., Va., presented by Mary Dupray, with John Easley and James Martin as witnesses. This Francis Dupray is not presently identified.

In the Laws of Virginia Supplement 1700/1730, Hening's Statutes at Large, p. 39, 12 May 1705, there is "An Act for Naturalization of Claude Philippe de Richebourg, and others." In the list, # 125 was Thomas duPre. John duPre was # ; his brother Lewis duPre was # 33. John Valton was # 122 on the list. Could this be the John James Vaulton (or Paulton) who is believed by the late Mr. Dennis L. Pettit to perhaps be the father-in-law of Thomas Dupray Jr.? Mr. Pettit's address was 6215 McCommas, Dallas, Texas 15214.

For additional documentation of this family, with later lines, see the two volumes of the book Dupree Trails.

The following child of Margaret (Easley) Dupray has been identified:

1.3.1 Thomas Dupray Jr., b. before 1714--will dated 10 May 1784, Lunenburg Co., Va.--probated 9 February 1786. Wit.; James Sanford, William T , Rich. Ingram. Will Book 3, p. 239. Thomas Dupray Jr. m. c. 1730-31, Susannah , b. c. 1715--d. after 14 January 1802.

Mr. Dennis L. Pettit suggested that she was Susan Vaulton, dau. of Dorcas by her second husband John James Vaulton/Valton, whom she married before 15 September 1708. Dorcas had married (1) John Lester, who was dead by 1704--for his given name, see Warner, Henrico Orphans Court, p. 100, 15 September 1708, and (3) by 5 October 1725, (Warner, Henrico Orphans Court, p. 108) Michael Taylor, who named his wife's children by her first two marriages in his will (dated 12 April 1735--recorded 5 April 1736, Henrico Co., Va.--Weisiger transcribed this name as Paulton). Susan Vaulton's sister, Dorcas Vaulton, was married to John Stovall, a neighbor of the Easley and Dupray families.

Mrs. Brady McCulloch suggested that Thomas Dupray Jr.'s wife was Susannah Stovall, dau. of John Stovall. Neither of these hypotheses has firm documentary proof. Hannah Stovall, dau. of Bartholomew Stovall and sister of the John Stovall in question, was married to Luke Wiles, who also features in the family documents abstracted below. Bartholomew Stovall did not emigrate from England until 1685, and he was then unmarried. It would take a series of early marriages for his son to have had a daughter old enough to marry Thomas Dupray Jr., since Bartholomew did not marry Ann Burton in Henrico Co., Va., until 1693.
