He married Mary C. SHIVLEY, daughter of Philip Shively and Elizabeth Bartlett on 28 May 1828 in Jefferson Co.,
KY. She was born in Jefferson Co., KY. She died in 1861.
Notes for Samuel Albert:
1840 Jefferson Co., KY Census:1 male, 10-15, b. 1835-18401
male,20-30 , b. 1810-18201 male 50-60, 1780-17902 female under
5, b.1835-1840, 1 female, 5-10, b. 1835-1830 2 female, 30-40,
b.1800-1810 Who is the exrtra female, 30-40 yrs old?
Notes for Mary C. SHIVLEY:
Mary C. Shivley was born 1807 in Jefferson Co., KY. She first
married George W. Moore on July 12, 1823, on the marriage bond,
she was listed as a daughter of Philip and he was deceased at
the time of the marriage and her guardian was a William Shivley,
who I am sure was her father's brother, her uncle. Mary and
George had no children and George died around 1810 and Mary married second to Samuel Albert,
(born 1781, in Maryland and died in 1847, in Jefferson Co., KY).
She was again listed as the daughter of Philip Shivley,
deceased. No guardian was listed as she was a grown woman and
widow at this point.
After Mary and Samuel had five children,
Samuel died some time between the 1840 and 1850 census.
Mary married third to Stephen Ross. They are found in the 1860
Oldham Co., KY census as follows:
Stephen Ross, farmer, 59,
4,000 acres
Mary, 53 yrs, b. KY
Julia Ross, 24 yrs
Saml
Albert, 19 yrs.
I can not find her in the 1870 census and am
assuming she died after 1860.
I have that Mary and Samuel Albert had Julia
Albert in 1835; but in the 1860 she is with her mother and
listed as Julia Ross, was this a census taker's mistake? I
believe so, because her brother is also with her, Samuel Albert.
I find Stephen Ross in the Oldham Co., Brownsboro District, KY
at 69 yrs old living with a Sarah A. age 44 yrs old and a Henry Essa at 44 yrs
old.
In the 1850 Jefferson
Co., Louisville, District 1 Census, Mary is listed as follows:
She is 42 yrs old, b. 1808, son George, 20 yrs, b. 1830, Julia,
15, b. 1835, Samuel, 8, born 1842.
Samuel Albert and Mary C. SHIVLEY had the following children:
i. GEORGE P. ALBERT was born on 18 Jan 1830 in KY.
ii. SUSAN E. ALBERT was born on 07 Jun 1832 in KY. She died on
13 Jul 1918 in Rossville, Vermilion Co., IL. She married Parker
Satterwhite on 08 Jul 1849 in Jefferson Co., KY. He was born on
18 Jul 1818 in Kentucky. He died in 1905 in Rossville, Vermilion
Co., IL.
iii. JULIA ALBERT was born on 25 Jan 1835 in KY. She married
UNKNOWN WEST.
Notes for Julia ALBERT:
Note: An Elizabeth R. Ross married John A. Lee on
8/7/1895 in Oldham County, KY. Julia Albert West died May
5, 1889 @ 57yrs. (born 1832) (Julia md. John B. Lee on 3/7/1869,

Edwin H. Van Patton in 1884, then she died in 1889. John B. Lee
died June 14, 1875 (Julia's husband, immediately above)
5. iv. LAURA VIRGINIA ALBERT was born on 11 Oct 1838 in KY. She
died on 17 Mar 1936 in Vermilion Co., IL. She married Patrick
PENDERGRAST, son of James Francis PENDERGRAST and Dorthea
Matthews MILLER on 23 Feb 1860 in Oldham Co., KY. He was born on
02 Jul 1832 in Jefferson Co., KY. He died on 09 Jan 1909 in
Vermilion Co., IL.

A recent discovery
of a letter written by a cousin in the 50's shed light on our Samuel
Albert's ancestry.
Generation One
Samuel Albert
was born circa 1781, in Hartford, Maryland. He first
married married
Polly Lawes on August 30, 1813 in Jefferson Co., KY. I don't
know when she died or if they had any children together. Samuel
married second to
Mary C. Shivley in Jefferson County, Kentucky on May 28, 1828.
Samuel died February 14, 1847 @ 66 yrs according to the family
bible records. Mary
is found living alone with her children in the 1850 Jefferson Co.,
Louisville, District 1 census after Samuel died in 1847. I do not know where Samuel is buried.
Quite possible at the Shivley Cemetery in Shivley, KY, as western suburb of what
is now Louisville, KY.
Samuel Albert is listed in the 1830 Jefferson Co., KY Census as follows:
One Male under Five (probably George P. Albert, b. 1830)
One Male 40-50 (Samuel Albert)
One Female 20-30 (Mary Crane Shivley)
There is a Thomas B. Miller nearby, and I suspect this is Dorthea Miller's
brother as she had one named Thomas, the B is for Buckner.
Samuel
Albert is listed in the 1840 Jefferson Co., KY Northern Division
as follows:
One Male, 10-15 (born 1825-1830
prob George P.)
One Male - 20-30 (born 1810-1820)
One Male - 50-60 (born 1780-1790, Samuel, who was born c. 1781)
Two Females under five (born 1835-1840) Laura and
One Female 5-10 (born 1830-1835)
Two Females 30-40 (born 1800-1810) one of these is Mary C.
Shivley, who is the other?
Mary C. Shivley Albert is found living alone in the 1850 census
with her children:
Mary C. Albert, 42 yrs, born KY
Julia, 15 yrs, born KY
Samuel, 8 yrs, born KY
George, 20 yrs, born KY, Carpenter

Samuel Albert and Mary Crane Shivley
had the following children:
|
George Philip Albert, January 18, 1830
-
According to Kentucky Death records, George died in 1921 at the age of 91
yrs. He indicates in the 1820 census that his father was born in
Maryland.
I've had some luck in tracking George P. Albert, my Laura's brother:
George P. Albert & Louisa L. Gregory
married May 20, 1851.
George
P. Albert is listed in the Jefferson County, KY 1900 Census living on
Buchanan Street as follows:
First, he states his father was born in Germany ~
in another census he indicates his father, Samuel, was born in Maryland...
In the
1870 Louisville Census there is a George Albert, wife Louisa,
daughter Ella, 18, daughter Mary, 11, George, 3 and Henry, 2/12.
My
note: George Jr. married a Catherine (born Ireland) and
had Margaret, Henry, Agnes, Catherine, Ella, Charles, Mary R.
Dorothy and Mary A. Per the 1920 Census Louisville, Ward
11, District 195.
He
married a "Josephine" (second) and number of years married in 1900 was 24, indicating
he married in 1876. She was 49 in 1900, indicating a birth year of May
1851. They have two children living at home in 1900, they are "Mollie
G. or C. age 44, born in 1855 (must be a child of Louisa L. Gregory). Second child is Bland G. or C. and he
was born in 1884 and is 15 in 1900 (child of second wife).
In
an 1896 directory for Louisville, his occupation is 'pattern maker' in the
medium of 'wood', whatever that means. His business name was "Bridgeford
& Co. and it was located at 205 Buchanan Street in Louisville, KY. He
is listed in an 1886 directory as well, still at 205 Buchanan and a pattern
maker.
In
the 1910 Census he is listed as follows:
George Albert, 80 yrs old
Josephine B, 58 yrs
Mollie C. (probably C and not G)
In
this census, 1910, George indicates his parents were born in the United
States !
George
is listed in the 1920 Census as follows:
George: 90 yrs
Josephine, 69
Claude, son, 35 yrs, born in 1885
Mary, dtr, 58 yrs, born in 1862

Susan Elizabeth Albert, born June 7, 1832 md Parker Satterwhite (son of John, b. 1753 VA, son of
James, b.) in Jefferson County, Kentucky on July 8, 1849. Parker
Satterwhite was born July 18, 1818, Frankfort, Kentucky. Parker
Satterwhite died in 1905 in Rossville, Vermilion County, IL. Susan was
born June 7, 1832 and died July 13, 1918. In the 1850 Louisville,
Jefferson Co. Census Parker and Susan are running a hotel.
She was 17 and he 27 when they married. Susan indicates on
census records that her father, Samuel Albert, was born in
Germany. Susan and her husband moved to Illinois sometime
between 1850 and 1860. In the 1910 census, Susan is living
with Nettie her daughter, and her sister, Laura Virginia Pendergrass, both
women were widows by this time.

Laura Virginia Albert born October 11, 1838, married Patrick Pendergrast (our line) |
|
John Samuel Albert, born March 15, 1842 - I believe John Samuel
went by the name 'Samuel' all his life ~ that is how he is
listed in census records. He is living with his mother and
her third Husband, Stephen Ross in Oldham Co., KY. Mary
must have married Stephen between 1850 and 1860. I have
not found John 'Samuel' Albert in any records (mostly census)
after the 1860. His mother died between 1860 and 1870, so
maybe he headed west after that or perhaps died. Update:
I've since found out in a letter written by Nettie Satterwhite
Miller that Samuel died in the fires out west of 1872. |
Generation Two
Laura Virginia Albert
was born October 11, 1838 in Jefferson Co., KY according to the
Smith Family bible. She married Patrick
Pendergrast in Oldham Co.,
Kentucky on February 23, 1860, according to Oldham Co. marriage records. They they migrated to Vermilion Co., IL. Laura walked behind the
wagon the entire trip according to my aunt, and she was wet nursed by a
black 'mammy', also according to my aunt. Laura and Patrick married on
February 23, 1860, (according to her dtrs bible record).
Laura Virginia Albert and Patrick Pendergrast had the following
children:
i. |
Austin Albert
Pendergrast, born 9/30/1863 ~ January, 1949 @ 85 yrs (birth
date from bible records), he lived in California and married
Sarah Lee Herndon, she was from Missouri. They had
at least two daughters, one by the name of Aline, pictured right, who married
a Walter Krause and had a daughter Mary. Aline had a sister named
Laura, obviously named for Austin's mother, Laura Virginia Albert.
I haven't discovered anything on her yet. His mother,
Laura Virginia Albert Pendergrast, spent a year out in
California with him after her husband Patrick died.
Austin did not attend his mother's funeral when she died in 1936, per
Aunt Helen. A dear
friend via the internet recently contacted me as she had saved a photo
album at a church bazaar. She then sleuthed around the internet
and found me, a cousin of Aline's.
See Aline Pendergrast's photo
album here. |
