I am working on a line who I believe our John descends from
here and
here.
First Generation
John GIBSON. Born circa 1720/25 in
Lancaster County, Virginia ? John died in Caswell County, North Carolina around
1779. When John was about 20, he married Mary
unknown , where we don't know, probably in Caswell County or perhaps
Lancaster Co., Virginia, we have, or at least I have no proof of his wife being Mary
DUNCAN outside of the will, i.e, I have no marriage record.
John died in 1779 before 1782 because his wife (Mary?) remarried to John Cooper July 13, 1782; the Bondsman/Witness was
Thomas Douglas.
Children of JOHN GIBSON and MARY

NOEMI GIBSON, b. 1753, Caswell Co., N.C.; m. WILLIAM HOGG, 1768.
Around 1788, two Wisdom brothers, John
and Thomas, left Wilkes County, North Carolina and traveled to
the wild and untamed land of Kentucky. They settled in Madison
County. By 1810, new counties had formed and boundaries had
changed. John's land lay in Cumberland County and Thomas' land
was in Adair County. Sometime before 1807 (probably around
1802) another brother, Joseph, arrived in Kentucky. The Joseph
Wisdom family and the William Hogg family probably left the
Wilkes/Burke County, NC area together sometime after 1790. They
traveled through Tennessee and while there, Joseph's daughter,
Mary, married William's son, Reuben in Grainger County. The
families settled in and around Barren County, Kentucky.
John Wisdom was believed to be the son of
John Wisdom and his first wife of Orange County, Virginia.
Thomas and Joseph were the sons of John Wisdom and his second
wife, Ann Collins. After old John's death, Ann moved with some
of her family to Wilkes County where she lived until her death. Some of the brothers' children moved from
Kentucky into Tennessee and later into Missouri.
Francis & Nancy Hogg Wisdom Francis Wisdom and Nancy
Hogg were married January 16, 1803 in Cumberland County,
Kentucky. Francis may have been the son of Joseph Wisdom and
Sarah Gardner who removed to Kentucky around 1800 from Burke
County, North Carolina. Nancy's parents were William and Noema
Gibson Hogg also from Burke/Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Francis and Nancy were living in Cumberland County, Kentucky in
1810 but moved to Tennessee sometime between 1810 - 1820.
Francis Wisdom was listed among the earliest settlers of
Lawrence County, Tennessee on the Tax List of 1819. Also listed
were Joseph Wisdom and other members of Joseph's family. In
1820, we find two Francis Wisdoms living in the area, one in
Hickman County and one in Wayne County. Maury, Hickman, and
Wayne Counties all bordered Lawrence County in those days. After
studying 1810, 1820, and 1830 census records, it seems that the
Francis living in Wayne County in 1820 was probably my ancestor. Sometime between 1820 and
1830, Francis and Nancy continued their westward movement into
the newly organized county of McNairy (formed 1823-1824).
McNairy County was formed from Chickasaw Indian Territory. Also
moving into McNairy County was the Samuel Turnbough family.
Whether these two families came into McNairy County together we
don't know but sometime around 1825, Francis and Nancy's
daughter, Noema "Oma", married Samuel's son, George. In 1827,
Samuel sold his property and with members of his family, began
his last major move toward his future home into the beautiful
Ozark Hills of Missouri. Oma said goodbye to her mother and
father and moved with her husband's family to Missouri. Joseph
and John Wisdom, probably Oma's older brothers, and the John
Chandler family may have made the trip with them. They were all
living in Washington County in 1830. Shortly after, the
Turnbough and Chandler families settled in the adjoining county
of Crawford. Francis and Nancy remained
in McNairy County, Tennessee with their five sons and three
daughters. Living close by was William Wisdom, probably a son,
age 20/'30 with his wife and three sons. Francis Wisdom was the
forerunner of the Wisdom family in the Washington, Crawford, and
Dent County areas in Missouri. According to family tradition,
Francis and Nancy came to Crawford Co., MO around 1835 when
their youngest son, Sargent, was six years old. Francis may have
died shortly after coming to Missouri.
He would have been around
60 years old when he made the trip from Tennessee. Nancy Wisdom
purchased land in Dent County, Missouri around 1857 and was
still living in 1870 at the age of 90. She was living in Dent
County, Missouri with or close to her son, Sargent, and his
family probably on the same property she had purchased earlier.
Living with her was eleven year old William "Little Willie"
Wisdom, her grandson. He was the son of George W. who had died
in the Civil War. Little Willie died young and is buried in an
old cemetery close by. It is not known where Nancy is buried. Children of Francis and
Nancy Hogg Wisdom were Noema, Francis Marion, Andrew Jackson,
Henry Harrison, George Washington, Mary, and Sargent. Though not
proven, it is probable that Joseph Wisdom (Washington County),
John Wisdom (Washington County), and William Wisdom, (McNairy
County) are also their sons. There were at least two other
daughters whose names are unknown.

Along the NC/VA border in the 2nd half of the 1700s, in the area of what
today is Pittsylvania Co VA & Caswell Co NC (formerly part of Orange &

Many of my Christian and Hopkins Counties ancestors migrated from South Carolina to Kentucky, and before that they were in North Carolina and before that Virginia. I recently discovered an 1800 Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina and our Gibson's were indeed there too.
"This book will be of great assistance in tracing the migration of families to the south and west. Most of the settlers during this early period came from the southern area of Virginia and the northern part of North Carolina, and most - by necessity considering the lack of roads and the opening of new lands - went to Northeast Georgia and eventually to Alabama and Mississippi. For these reasons the notes rely heavily on the Virginia and North Carolina records.
The addition of notes on the Census adds immeasurable to the value of this work. The author has been careful to indicate in his notes items which appear to support the entry but which are not proven. These have been expressed as "probably", "perhaps", et cetera. Therefore, the reader will find these notes a worthwhile set of "clues" with which to pursue further any specific area of interest.
The file used by the author in making the notes was developed through 10 years of research. However, it has been impossible to search the records of every state and county from which settlers came.
Introduction:
Pendleton, the most western of the South Carolina Districts, served in the years following the close of the Revolutionary War as a gateway to Georgia, Alabama, and, in time, to the West. Before Pendleton District was divided into Pickens, Anderson and Oconee Counties and so disappeared, a stream of settlers - mostly from Virginia and North Carolina, entered it's boundaries; a few remained permanently but the majority after a few months or years moved on southward and westward.
Much has been published concerning the migration from the Valley of Virginia to the West by way of Kentucky, but very little on the movement of families from the Valley and Southside Virginia, and the North Carolina Counties, particularly along the Virginia boundary, into South Carolina and thence to Georgia and Alabama. The notes accompanying many of the names listed in this 1800 Census enumeration were accumulated by the writer in following his own family along these roads.
Data on the formation of South Carolina political divisions are confusing. The counties derive from political and judicial districts. Ninety-six District (96 miles from Keowee) was formed in 1769 and was discarded in 1798; from this judicial district, Pendleton was set off in 1789 and its first court was held the Spring of 1790. Between 1795 and 1798, Pendleton was in Washington Judicial District and when that designation was discarded in 1798, Pendleton and Greenville Districts were set up. Pendleton was divided into Pickens and Anderson Districts in 1826 and the name Pendleton discarded. When, under the Constitution of 1868, the entitlement of districts was changed to counties, Oconee County was formed from Pickens District. In 1800, Pendleton had Three militia districts, the boundaries of which wer virtually the same as today's county boundaries, and the census enumeration was separated according to the militia districts: Col. Brown's Regiment was in what is now in Pickens County, Col. Kilpatrick in Oconee County and Col. Moor in Andersons County. The chief road from the North into western South Carolina was the Great Indian Warpath or Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia which ran through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, old Lunenburg County, Virginia, and the Yadkin country of North Carolina, connecting with the lower Cherokee Traders Path east of Spartanburg District, South Carolina. A few hardy souls lived in Pendleton District before the opening of land for sale in the 1780's - deed for Pendleton land are found as early as 1781 in Abbeville County - and by 1790 the area was well populated for the time and place, bustling with movement, the building of new roads and the cultivation of farms.
The 1790 census has long been available, but only in recent years, since the writer requested the National Archives and Records Service of the General Services Administration to edit and microfilm the 1800 census has this valuable tool for genealogists become generally useful for researchers. The names from the 1800 census given here were copied from this microfilm, then checked for spelling and other data with the 1790 enumeration of Pendleton and other districts, in many cases with the 1810 and later enumerations, and with deeds, court and other records. A large number of the families have been checked with the 1790 census of North Carolina, with Virginia tax lists before 1800, accompanying the census were compiled from deeds, court cases, and other data from Pendleton and other districts of South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, etc., as well as family histories and statements of descendants, ands such sources as military pension applications.
The data are not inclusive, of course, in the case of any family.
The liberal use of deeds serves several purposes: They indicate the route followed by the census enumerator, in many cases the year of the settler's arrival in Pendleton, and in some cases where they came from and where he went after leaving Pendleton. Particularly, deeds showing land grants before 1790 have been included. Since the 1790 census is available in printed form, reference is made to it only for occasionally necessary explanations, but it should be studied along the with the 1800 census and later ones. The data given under various names are not intended to comprise completed genealogical sketches; rather it has bee the writer's purpose to identify families where possible and, chiefly, to indicate their movements. However, experience has shown that the data can be of considerable value in indicating the possible direction of genealogical search. It should be remembered that similarity of names and neighbors may be and frequently is a useful clue to relationships, but does not constitute genealogical proof - it is merely a useful tool when properly used.
Reference in the notes to "1790", "1800", "1850" will be understood to refer to the census enumerations of those years unless otherwise stated. Land purchases may be found in the old Pendleton deeds now in Anderson County except in cases where another county of filing is noted."
The following excerpt was on the same page as an entry for Bennett Combs:
594: Bennett Combs: 11001-52001-02
Combs was granted land on Fifteen Mile Creek 5 March 1792 and also bought a tract nearby granted Thomas Shirley 21 Jan 1785. He sold 20 Dec 1797 part of the latter tract to Willoughby Broughton of a Surry County, N.C., family, and nine days later sold an additional 640 acres to John and Mary Gipson (Gibson) both of whom lived on Fifteen mile Creek. Bennett Combs and Abraham and Peter Perkins were witnesses 21 Aug 1797, when
Nicholas Perkins of Pittsylvania County, VA, sold land on Reeves Creek to Jesse Binum. Some of the Perkins family moved from Pittsylvania County to Stokes County, N.C. in this period; Combs may have been from that area. The 1785 Wilkes County, Ga., tax list shows John Combs as trustee for Amos Richardson of a family in Pittsylvania and nearby counties in Virginia."
The entry for Mary Gibson:
603. Mary Gibson 1-2-0-0-0 0-0-1-1-0-05
Indicating: One male under ten years, two males between 10-16, one female between 16-26, one female between 26-45 (Mary) and it looks like five slaves.
Mary bought of Bennett Combs (No. 594 above) 29 Dec 1797, land on Fifteen-Mile Creek, adjoining John Gibson, who evidently moved before 1800 to another part of what is now Pickens County. Some members of the Gibson family in Oconee County were from the Surry-Rockingham County, N.C., area, and perhaps those in Pickens County were also. Both the Gibson and Combs families lived in Surry County as early as 1771.
1020. Thomas Gibson 10020-10100-00
Under the entry for Thomas Gibson above:
if not all of the Gibson's in Pendleton District are of a family that
moved from Pittsylvania County, VA., to Surry County, N.C., between 1767
and 1771. James, William, Julius and Humphrey Gibson were in Pendleton by 1790. John Gibson, a carpenter, who appears to have been a son of the widow Mary Gibson, both of whom were enumerated in 1800 in what is now Pickens County, bought land on Big Beaverdam of Tugaloo River 15 March 1797 from Samuel Watt of Abbeville, who received the grant 7 Jan 1788. Another John Gibson lived on Cane Creek
(No. 386 above). The Field family that sent representatives to Pendleton intermarried with the Gibson's in Onslow County, N.C. (will of William Gibson, 1784) and in Rockingham County, N.C. (will of Joseph Gibson, 1790)."

The following paragraph was in
"Family Histories of Christian County, Kentucky" that was published by the Christian County Genealogical Society in 1986 (in my possession). I've heard from another researcher who believes Joel's, father was an
Andrew Gibson; her e-mail notes and her address are on my
Gibson Notes page. I'd be interested in hearing what others' have to say. I now have the will of Mary Duncan, widow of John Gibson which I
believe "proves"
John was the father of Joel and my John. If their father was indeed an Andrew Gibson, then I will
gladly correct my records, but right now more proof exists that the father of John and Joel was a John Gibson and Mary Duncan (Mary married John Cooper after her husband John died, and it is her will above that names her children, including Joel and John). |
Family Histories of Christian County, Kentucky
"John Gibson was thought to have been born in Pennsylvania or Virginia and he married a Mary? around 1745 in Caswell County, NC. John was born c 1725 and the children of John and Mary were: 1) Joel who was born circa 1749 in Virginia and married Eleanor Davis in Pittsylvania County, VA c 1770 and died December 23, 1830 in Henderson County, KY. Joel is buried in the Gibson cemetery near Corydon, KY. 2) Susannah who was born c 1751 in Virginia and died Dec 8, 1832 in Pulaski County, KY. She is buried in old Higgins Cemetery in Pulaski County, KY. 3) Naomi who was born c 1753 in North Carolina and married William Hogg in North Carolina c ? 4) John was born c 1758 in Orange County, NC, married Judith Hogg in Caswell County, NC on June 8, 1779 and died Dec 8 1830 in Christian County. 5) James was born 1760 in Virginia, married Frances? in North Carolina and died in 1802 in Caswell County, NC. 6) Richard was born c 1761 in Virginia, married Ann Yates in Pittsylvania County, VA c 1788 and died c 1811 in Caswell County, NC. 7) Julius was born c 1764 in North Carolina and died after 1813 in Pickens County, SC 8) William born c 1776 and died c 1810 in Kentucky. 9) Lucresha was born c 1768 in Virginia and married a Birchfield C 1788 in North Carolina 10) Hannah was born c 1775 in Orange County, NC and married Jesse Lay in Caswell county NC c 1795 and he died after 1850 in Whitley County, KY.
It is thought that John came to Christian County, KY around 1803. Bailey Gibson, the son of Joel (1) was in Henderson County in 1813. Bailey received land grants in 1818 as he married Catherine Sights on Feb 22, 1813. Bailey received land grants in 1818 and in 1824 for a total of 6,000 acres and operated "Gibson Plantation" in the vicinity of Cairo. It is thought that Joel Gibson was with his brother in Christian County before he came to Henderson County. More is known of Joel that of the other children of John Gibson and Mary Unknown." (I believe her last name is Duncan)
According to the Andrew Gibson Family History in the History of Henderson County, KY book (found in their public library), Andrew Gibson born 1708 in Scotland came to America in 1728 or 1730 living in Princes Ann County, Va. He married a Mary Unknown in about 1738. They had 1) John Gibson b 1744 married to Tamar Ellis 2) James Gibson b 1740 married Jane? 3) JOEL GIBSON b 1749 and more children not mentioned.
ANDREW GIBSON and his family moved from VA to Wilkes Co., NC probably in 1750's then on to Caswell Co., NC before the Rev. War. Andrew died there in 1779 at about age 71. An inventory of his will of his estate was made in 1782. A division was made then, but no heirs were found. Mary, his wife died in 1782 without a will, but her estate was made in 1795 without any heirs named. This information was from Jesse Chandler of Lachine, Michigan (according to this book).
Andrew's son, Joel Gibson served 7years in the war according to the statement made by William Hill, Secretary of State in NC in 1825 when Joel received his pension. Joel had a son named Bailey, who had Pittman b 1815 Henderson county, who had Green Gibson in 1840. I am from this line of Gibson's.
Here is what the section says:
The First Generation:
Andrew Gibson was born in Scotland approximately in the year of 1708. He migrated to America in the year of 1728 or 1730. He lived in Princes Ann County, VA. There he met and married a woman named Mary ? in about 1738. She was probably born in VA in the year 1718. No record has ever been found of her last name.
Their children were as follows:
1. John Gibson - born 1744 married Tamar Ellis. He died in 1788. He was a Private in the Revolutionary Army. He lived in Caswell Co., NC at that time. In the NC 1784-1787 census he was listed as living in that county.
2. James Gibson - born 1740 married Jane ? He was also a Private in the Revolutionary War. He and wife is also listed in the census.
3. Joel Gibson - b 1749 married Eleanor Davis probably in 1783. Eleanor was born appx. 1760 either in NC or VA. They are my great-great-great-great grandparents. Joel, his 2 brothers mentioned above, and other brothers and sisters not mentioned were born in Princess Ann County, VA. He was also a Private in the Rev. war. He and his wife Eleanor were living in Caswell Co., NC 1784-1787 census said. He enlisted in the 1st company of the NC Line under Capt. Henry Dixon, the regiment commanded by Col. James Moore. Joel served 7 years in the war according to the statement made by William Hill, Secretary of State in NC in 1825 when Joel received his pension.
Andrew Gibson and his wife Mary moved his family from VA to Wilkes Co., NC including John, James, and Joel probably in the 1750s then on to Caswell Co., NC before the war. Andrew, their father, died there in Caswell Co. in 1779 at approximately age of 71. An inventory of his will of his estate was made in 1782. A division was made then, but his heirs could not be found. Mary, his wife, died in 1782 without a will.
The Second Generation:
Joel received a pension for his Rev. war services in 1825. He died on 12-23-1830 and is buried in the Old Gibson Cemetery on the Hugh Sights Road near Corydon, Ky. Joel Gibson's name is on the war memorial monument on the courthouse square in Henderson. He is one of 14 vets listed there."

Wilkes County, NC - Just when the first white settlers came to what is now Wilkes county is not known. As early as l740 the crack of the white man's rifle had brought the timid deer to the ground and frightened the other animals of the forest. Governor Rowan wrote that "In the year of l746, I was in the territory from the Saxaphaw (now Haw river) to the mountains, and there was not above one hundred fighting men in all that back country." According to the Colonial Records there were, in l749, only three hundred taxable men in North Carolina west of Haw river.
About the year of l750 three streams of immigrants began to pour into this section of the state - one from south-eastern Pennsylvania, one from eastern North Carolina and one from South Carolina. But most of the settlers coming within the present borders of Wilkes county came from eastern North Carolina. Among them may be mentioned the Stokes, Greenes, Mitchells, Wellbornes, Browns, and others. Most of these were of English descent.

John Gibson and Mary ? had the following children:
i. |
Joel Gibson born circa 1749 in Virginia and married Eleanor Davis in Pittsylvania County, VA c 1770 and died December 30, 1830). This is Larry Wilson's line, LWilson181@aol.com - From him: Elandor "Ellen" Davis was born about 1753 in Caswell County, NC (according to another researcher). She married Joel Gibson of Virginia about 1770, location unknown. She died before 1824 in Henderson County, KY, they had the following children: Burgess Gibson, 1774; Robert Gibson, 1778; Greenberry Gibson, 1780, Elizabeth Margaret Gibson, 1782; Bailey Gibson, 1784; Berryman W. Gibson, July 13, 1785; Tilmon Gibson, 1787; Nancy Gibson, 1788; and Vicey Gibson; 1790. Except for Berryman Gibson, all years of birth are estimates. Tilmon Gibson is my ancestor. I have seen his name written Tilmon, Tillman and Tilghman - do not know which is correct, but subsequent generations used Tilmon to name children. L. Wilson |
ii. |
Susannah Gibson Born in 1751. Susannah died on 8 Dec 1832, she was 81. Buried in Higgins cemetery, Pulaski, Kentucky. Susannah married David LAY. They had: Charles Middleton LAY b: 10 MAR 1759 in Pittsylvania Co, VA, David II LAY b: Abt 1765, Elizabeth "Betsy" LAY b: JUN 1775 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, Burrell LAY b: 1776 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, Mary "Nancy" LAY b: 5 APR 1776 in Caswell Co., NC, Bartlett LAY b: 1777, William LAY b: 1785, Hetta LAY b: 1786, Instant Sr. LAY b: 1787 in Caswell Co., NC, George LAY b: 1788.
David Lay appears as a landowner in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, just across the border from Caswell Co. North Carolina in 1764. Pittsylvania Co. split from Halifax Co. in 1766. He married Susannah Gibson, the daughter of John and Mary Gibson. Names of David and Susannah’s children and other data are as yet lacking.
We know little about John Gibson, other than that he was an owner of extensive land holdings. After his death, his widow Mary married secondly, John Cooper 13 July 1782,
Thomas Douglas bondsman and John Douglas, witness. Although remarried, she is frequently referred to after her marriage as "Gibson."
A remarkable woman, she engaged in extensive land dealings in her own name for a period of more than 25 years. Her prenuptial agreement with John Cooper dated 10 July 1782, stipulated that Cooper would not interfere with the disposal of her property to her children and would make no claims on it.
The distribution of Mary Gibson’s property listed her heirs in an order that suggests a ranking by age:
1. Hannah Lay 2. Richard Gibson 3. Lucretia Burchfield 4. William Gibson 5. Julius Gibson 6. Naoma "Omey" Hogg 7. James Gibson 8. Susannah Lay 9. John Gibson 10. Joel Gibson
Omey Hogg appears to be Naoma Gibson, probable daughter of Mary, who married William Hogg and appears in Grainger Co., Tennessee in 1794-1795. There is a will for James Gibson dated 11 November 1802, and proved April 1803, with wife Frances.
James, John and Joel Gibson all appear in the NC State Census of 1786 (Caswell Co., St. David’s District.) in the 21-60-age category. This indicates that they were born before 1765.
John Gibson married Juda Hogg in Caswell Co. on 8 June 1779, John Brockman bondsman and William Campbell, witness.
According to Arlie Lay, Susanna was the wife of David Lay, Jr. (David Lay Jr. has been tracked to Pittsylvania Co. Virginia immediately to the north of Caswell Co. This designation of ‘Jr.’ and ‘Sr.’ is confusing as David was referred to as ‘Jr.’ in Pittsylvania records but as ‘Sr.’ in later Caswell Co. records.) This property was located on the state line with Virginia.
In Caswell Co. Deed Book A, is an indenture between Jesse Lay and Braxton Cox for the "whole lot of land that fell to the aforesaid Jesse Lay by marriage to Hannah Gibson, heir of John and Mary Gibson." Jesse is described as of Campbell Co. Tennessee. Braxton Cox appears in the same Militia Company with the Lays in Campbell Co. in 1818, 1819, 1820, 1821, and 1822 Tax Lists. Braxton is described as ‘of Campbell Co. Tennessee’ in the 5th of June 1810 power of attorney to represent Jesse in the 01 Oct. 1810 sale of the inherited property to Epaphroditus Stone. Braxton eventually appears in Roane and Meigs Cos. Tennessee.
In the 1787 tax lists for Pittsylvania Co. Virginia, we find John, David and David Lay Jr. David Lay appears with one male between ages 16-21. A David Lay appears the first time with a land transfer recorded in Claiborne County, Tennessee from the infamous James Glasgow in 1795. Campbell County at this period was part of Claiborne. |

Julius, a Wilkes County taxable in 1784.
----------------------------------------------------------
Thomas Gibson. His 5 November 1775 Orange County will was proved
in May 1776 [A:195]. He named his (then) wife, Mary, and
mentioned but did not name his "Sons and Daughters now living in
the County" and provided for the schooling of his unnamed
younger children. Joel Gibson and Lucrecy Collins were
witnesses; Thomas Gibson, Sr., was executor.
After his death
Mary entered 300 acres on Greens Creek and Rutledges Creek in
Caswell County on 13 January 1779 on a line agreed between
William Hog and Julius Gibson [Pruitt, Land Entries: Caswell
County, 75], and she entered 200 acres in Caswell County on the
South Hyco Creek bordering Orange County on 26 July 1779
[Pruitt, Land Entries: Caswell County, I:89]. She was taxable in
Caswell in 1790 [NC:79]. The inventory of her Caswell County
estate was recorded by Joel Gibson in 1795. The inventory
mentioned James, John, and Richard Gibson [WB C:118]. |
viii. |
Lucretia Gibson Born in 1768 in Virginia. In 1788 when Lucresha
was 20, she married Adam BIRCHFIELD, in North Carolina. |
ix. |
William Gibson Born in 1776. William died in 1810, he was 34,
married |
x. |
Hannah Gibson - Born in 1775 in Orange County, North Carolina. Hannah Gibson was first married to Joseph Baird in 1794 or 95 with 3 sons from that marriage. In 1795 when Hannah was 40, she married Jesse LAY, in Caswell County, North Carolina. |
Third Generation
John GIBSON. Born
circa 1758 in Orange Co., North Carolina. John died in Christian County, Kentucky on 8 Dec 1830, he was 72. John married Judith HOGG, daughter of Gideon HOGG, SR. & Judah
Gibson?, in Caswell County, North Carolina. Born in 1759, Judith died in Kentucky in 1845, she was 86. Died 8 DEC 1830 in Trade Water River, Christian Co., KY (from Ancestry.com). John Gibson married Juda Hogg in Caswell Co. on 8 June 1779, John Brockman bondsman and William Campbell, witness. John and others from North Carolina very likely lived in South Carolina before coming to Kentucky.
The 1820 Christian County, KY Census lists the following Gibson, and their near neighbors. The Shelton's, Gibson's, Lindley's, Long's and Thompson's all intermarried. I am related to the Shelton's, Gibson's and Lindley's.

After more research, and more evidence of such, I know there were
two John Gibson's in Christian County in the early 1800's and the one mentioned below isn't my line. Now whether or not he and mine are cousins has not been determined.
From Perrin's History on Christian County: "John Gibson lived near where the Insane Asylum stands, and was a very early settler. He was a quiet man, attended strictly to his own business, and possessed very little notoriety in any way. He was born in Virginia in 1777, and died here in 1844."
The birth and death dates are different than what I have on "our" John Gibson and supposedly his daughter, Elizabeth, our line, was born in 1780 so this couldn't be our John'.
This from Perrin's too: Cemeteries.- To care for the dead, and beautify and adorn their silent habitations is solemn duty incumbent upon the living, and a beautiful, well-kept burying-ground is a sure index of the finer feelings of the people to whom it belongs. Abraham said: " Give me possession of a bury-ins-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of sight," and since that day all nations and peoples have paid more or less respect to their dead, according to their stage of civilization.
The early records of the county show that Bartholomew Wood, among other donations to the town of Hopkinsville, made one of a certain lot of land for a cemetery. This is in the southwest part of the city, adjoining the grounds of the High School building. and is known as the Old Baptist Cemetery. Here, where the grass, weeds and briers grow rank with the vapors of decaying mortality, sleep many of the early pioneers of Hopkinsville and Christian County, some of them without so much as a rude boulder to mark the spot where they lie. Upon the stones, now crumbling into dust like the bores which rest beneath them, appear many names once well known in the town. There is the name almost obliterated by moss growing over it of Benjamin Eggleston, who died in 1819 ; Francis M. Dallam, who died in 1823 ; William Nichol in 1829 ; Benjamin York in 1825 ; John Gibson, born in 1777 and died in 1844; Mrs. Ann E. Wood in 1838 ; James H. McLaughlan, the first regular Circuit Clerk, died in 1 823; Peyton Short in 1825; Edward Slaughter in 1839 ; Dr. Moses Steele in 1517 ; Mrs. Susanna Steele, born December ?5, 17-40, and died in 1820 , Mrs. ~llary Bell in 1818; Benjamin W. Patton in 1825; John Long in 1816; Samuel A. Miller in 1823, and many others who passed away half a century ago. Some of the old family servants sleep there too, side by side with their masters, and " six feet of earth make them all of one size."
Note to Self: Who is Benjamin York? My York line moved from North Carolina to Christian County also, is this a brother to one of mine?

Our John Gibson and Judah (Judith Hogg) had the following children: (three of these girls married into the Lindley family.) I am descended through two of these children, Elizabeth and Meredith. Elizabeth married Thomas Lindley, Meredith married Hannah Moore
who had Mary Gibson who married Constant Ratcliffe. Elizabeth Gibson
married Thomas Lindley and had Mary Lindley who married
i |
Elizabeth Gibson -(1780-1857) (our line) married Thomas Lindley in Christian Co., KY, buried in the Ratliff Cemetery in Christian Co., KY. |
ii |
Parthenia Gibson - (Theny), born circa 1782 in Caswell County, NC, died c 1824 in Greene County, MO and was married to Jahu Lindley May 11, 1806 in Christian County, KY. |
iii |
Alsey Ruth Gibson -(1785-~1858) She married Jacob Marion Lindley, she is buried in the Lindley cemetery in Peerless County, Texas. |
iv |
Meredith Gibson (1790-1860). Meredith married
Hannah Moore (daughter of John Moore and Mildred Lucas Bell) and had America S. Gibson, Aurelius Byron Gibson, (Aurelius Byron Gibson married Nancy Elizabeth Tolbert Woodruff, daughter of Francis Davis and John Willis Woodruff), Mary Bertha Gibson, married Constant Oglesby Ratcliff) John Morehead Gibson,
Pitman F. Gibson, William Gibson and Narcissa L. Gibson. According to Kentucky marriages I found on Ancestry.com, Meredith and Hannah "Moore" married in Caldwell County, KY on
24 August 1815. I have viewed their original marriage bond and took a picture of it with my digital camera, a copy of it is in this paragraph. Meredith was in the war of 1812 and I have his military papers and his wife's pension from the war.
According
to the 1840 Christian County, KY census, Meredith was born in North
Carolina. Hannah's will is below. Her father was John B. Moore and Mildred Lee Bell.

iii |
America S. Gibson - born 1822, married 3 March 1853 to John W. Denton |
iv |
Aurelius R. Gibson - married Nancy Elizabeth Tolbert Woodruff on 4 Jun 1865 in Christian County, KY. Elizabeth descends from my
Woodruff line. |
v |
John Moorehead Gibson - born 1827, Christian County, KY, married Sarah Jane Hammond on 22 Aug 1888 in Christian County, KY. |
vi |
Caroline Gibson - born ?, married 11 Aug 1850 to David G. Hopson in Christian county, KY. |
viii |
Narcissa Gibson - her name is strange and I've seen it spelled a couple of different ways. |
ix |
William Lee Gibson - born 1834, Christian County, KY, married 27 July 1858 to Melvira Prudence or Elizabeth Savira Long?,
Next to Mary (Gibson) Ratliff is her brother, William L. Gibson and wife Melvina. They have a son Charlie, age 17, Mary's nephew.
The one in the picture I'm guessing.
William L. Gibson married Melvira * P. Long July 3, 1858 in Christian Co. - I know her name appears as Melvina in 1880 census, but it is supposed to be Melvira.
William L. Gibson served in Co. A 3rd Ky. Cavalry in the Civil War, the same one that John A. B. Ratliff served in, (John's nephew). He filed an application for Pension in April 1872, and his widow Melvira filed an application in March 1899, so William must have died just shortly before that date.

Pitman Gibson -
Feb 6 1819 (KY Marriage records). Pitman Gibson served in the Civil War,
Kentucky 17th Infantry, Company G.
See more here.
Sherry Babb (sbabb@swbell.net) says that one of her researchers said that Pittman and family moved to Alabama and died there in Marengo Co. in 1840. John Ross (JRoss54254@aol.com) says that Samuel Alexander was his ggfather; therefore Pittman was his gggfather and he does not have Malcolm listed as Pittman's child.
Pittman Jr. married Catherine unknown & stayed in KY.
Search of the 1850 Census Records of Marengo Co. AL on p. 34A, lists #240: Pitman Gibson, 50, M, farmer, worth of assets $2,000, b. NC Susan Gibson, 47, F, b. NC; children: Samuel 18, M, student, Catherine, 16 F; Virgil 14, M; Susan 13,F; Mary A, 12, F; Lucy A. 11, F; all born in Kentucky. This proves that he did NOT die in 1840..... Appears in 1830 and 1840 Christian Co., KY Census; appears in 1850 Census of Marengo Co. AL (as above). |

"Charlie Gibson, pictured left, I believe he could be wearing his father's Civil War uniform,
- According to Christian County Marriage records; Charles S. Gibson married
Minabell Gladdish on November 24, 1896 by R. L. Melton, MG and witnesses were P. B. Monk, and J. W. Boyd. The Monks were associated with our family through Mary Polly Lindley who was married to Wallace Lynn who had Lucy Clementine Lynn who married John A. B. Ratcliff. I believe the Mina Gladdish below in the Gibson Cemetery is this Charlie Gibson's wife mentioned above.
And Charlie Gibson is the son of
William Gibson (who is the son of Meredith Gibson and brother of
Mary B. Gibson who married
Constant Oglesby Ratliff.)
In the 1880 census, next to Mary (Gibson) Ratliff is her brother, William L. Gibson and wife Melvina. They have a son Charlie, age 17, Mary's nephew.
William L. Gibson married Melvira * P. Long July 3, 1858 in Christian Co. * I know her name appears as Melvina in 1880 census, but it is supposed to be Melvira.
William L. Gibson served in
Co. A 3rd Ky. Cavalry in the Civil War, the same one that
John A. B. Ratliff served in, (John's nephew). He filed an application for Pension in April 1872, and his widow Melvira filed an application in March 1899, so William must have died just shortly before that date.

They are close to Meredith Gibson, his sisters Belle (called Serena in 1900) and Jenny (called Hannah J. in 1900) and Richard Ratcliff 55, Widower, their cousin). Meredith, Belle, and Jenny never married, and were living together in both 1920, and 1930.
Gipson (Aurelius Gibson, son of Meredith Gibson and Hannah Moore) married N. E. T. Woodruff on June 4, 1865. She is your Nancy Elisabeth Tolbert
(Talbot) Woodruff, daughter of John and Frances Davis Woodruff. They apparently had no children, as in the 1880 census in Hopkins Co., St. Charles Dist. they are listed as Gipson Anrealis 56, wife Nancy E. T. 58, and have a niece Elisabeth C. Woodruff living with them.
Meredith and Hannah's son Pitman Gibson is in the 1860 census in Hopkins Co. living with his sister, America (Gibson) Denton, age 35, and brother-in-law John W. Denton, age 41, Sarah Denton 16, Nancy Denton 14, and David Denton 12, and Gibson P. T. age 29.
Those Denton children must be John's by a first wife, since they weren't married until 1853.

The "Gibson Cemetery" where
Constant Oglesby Ratcliffe and his wife
Mary "Polly" Gibson are buried is pictured below. I've been to this cemetery three times, it's in Christian County, KY and is in the middle of a field and is sorely neglected. The other cemetery stones that can be found were
P. F. Gibson, (he is a child of
John Gibson and
Juda Hogg Gibson) and
J. M. Wiggins, born December 29, 1872, died August 31, 1898 (he is connected through our Ratliff line, but why he is buried here is unknown). There are also 35-40 field stone markers that we assume were the Gibson family members or slaves. (The cemetery is inside this grove of trees - "click" to enlarge).
Per cemetery records for the Northern section of Christian County, the following persons are buried in the
Gibson
Cemetery pictured left.
(From Hopkinsville at the intersection of highway 41N and 1682, go on 41N 9.3 miles, turn left, go 1.7 miles, cemetery is in the back of the house in a grove of trees.) As of my visit in 2001 and 2002, the cemetery is all but grown over and the only stones I could find were of Constant Ratcliff's and P. F. Gibson's. |

Now I know why, because she is buried in the Castleberry Cemetery in Crofton and not at the Gibson family cemetery; and I took a picture of the stone at Castleberry while there in 2004.

Notes from Wilma:
On another note, I believe the Mary Ratliff you have in the 1880 census, is Mary (Gibson) Ratliff, widow of Constant O. Ratliff. Those were their children's names and ages. Living next to her are her two brothers, William and John M. Gibson. Remember that news article about Mrs. Polly (Mary) Ratliff being ill at the home of her brother John Gibson? Polly Ratliff, the daughter of John Ratliff and Nancy Oglesby married Constant Mezzo in 1833. The Mezzo family lived next to Oglesby's in the 1830 census. I Believe I've found Constant Mezzo (although it's spelled Morzoe) in Hamilton Co. Ill. in 1850 census, but with a new wife. I forgot to bring my notes with me, but I think her name was Emmaline. Also there are John C. Oglesby 54 or 57 born in Tenn. Looks like the Oglesby's came through Tenn. on their way to Ky. There are also Wade Oglesby, Henry Oglesby, and P. C. Oglesby right next to him, possibly his sons? I'll keep exploring that angle and see what happens. |

Go approximately one fourth mile and cemetery in on the right on the hill
The Gibson Family Cemetery is a small cemetery outside of Corydon, Kentucky. We were only there once, back in the summer of 1976. There was no gate or formal entrance that we can remember, and the little cemetery was in terrible shape. My husband mowed one day, and the following day we went back to write down all of the inscriptions that we could read on the tipped over and worn stones.
We contacted a cousin, Jan Gibson, to take our records back to the cemetery in 1981, so as to confirm and make corrections to the dates, etc as we had written them. We recognize her for her efforts.
We do not have any access to plot records, burial records or death records, and the following is taken as best as we could from the stones themselves and nothing more. Surnames are alphabetized, and we made every effort to group families together. Our living relatives there now are elderly and incapable of keeping up the cemetery, and we have no idea if it is being mowed or anything. We are trying to remedy this situation by next summer. This little cemetery would be a good candidate for the Cemetery Restoration Project going on in America now.
